NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour

(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) At Bowman Gray Stadium, the true mark of a champion isn’t how they react when they qualify on the pole or take the checkered flag. The points battle is about perseverance when
misfortune strikes.
And on Saturday in the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series, both Tim Brown of Tobaccoville and Burt Myers of Walnut Cove showed that they are excellent examples of the mindset necessary to take the Modified crown.
Tim Brown’s season started off on a surprisingly mediocre note. His qualifying was off and his performance in the race wasn’t what Brown is accustomed to. But his team kept striving and working on the car – and apparently,
they’ve now hit on something as Brown has won in four of the last five weeks.
“This race team is on it right now. The racecar is just hooked up and running great,” said Brown after winning last event’s Camping World 100. “We’re not changing a thing. If anything, we’re going to work harder.”
On the other side of the coin, Burt Myers’s season started off strongly but bad luck struck him powerfully on Saturday. “The bottom line is, sometimes you get the bear. Sometimes the bear gets you. It just wasn’t our night,” said
Burt Myers.
“The car was great. It really was. I think we gained like eight spots there on that first start. I thought we were in a really good spot,” said Myers. But then disaster struck as he got tangled up in traffic and fell back a few positions. On top
of that, he lost a lap in the pits after being black-flagged for leaking fluid.
“We’ve got a little issue with the car overheating a little bit when I’m in traffic. I got down, and I got in cool air – and it quit puking water. And then when we tightened up, I guess it puked out a little more and we had to come in and
make a pit stop,” said Myers. “There’s no need to make excuses or complain. We just had a bad night.”
“When it’s not your night – I can sit here and run through scenarios all night long. But when it’s not your night, there’s nothing you can do to change that. You just roll with the punches. And we’ll come back, get it fixed, and hopefully
be stronger next week,” said Myers. “Everything happens for a reason. You just keep digging.”
Brown’s victory and Myers’s misfortune leads to a 22-point swing in the Modified totals. Brown moves up into the points lead, while Myers falls down to tie Chris Fleming for second in the points standings.
In the Farm Bureau Insurance Sportsman Series, Taylor Branch of Lewisville maintains his points lead, with Tommy Neal of Walkertown moving up to second on the points ladder.
Jeremy Warren of Winston-Salem moves up from fourth to second in the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series standings, but Winston-Salem resident Brian Wall’s third place finish strengthens his points lead.
In the McDowell Heating & Air Stadium Stock Series, Brandon Brendle of Winston-Salem stays on top of the points ladder, while Shane Southard of Yadkinville and Wesley Thompson of Advance move up to second and third – ready to
challenge for the lead.
The battle for the division titles continues this Saturday. There will be twin 25-lap race for the Modifieds, a Sportsman 60-lapper, and racing for the Street Stock and Stadium Stock Divisions.
Gates open at 6:00 for practice, and the first race begins at 8:00 PMthis Saturday night. Ticket prices, directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by calling (336) 723-1819.
