HARTNETT WINS PENN CAN MODIFIED FEATURE…ROONEY, KATO, WOLF, BEACH, AND UNDERWOOD ALSO WIN

Susquehanna, PA…For the first time in the 2014 racing season the weather for the racing program at Penn Can Speedway in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania was not a factor. A great field of cars and a very large crowd came out to see Kevin Hartnett of Barto, PA come from deep in the pack to claim his second modified feature of the season. Paul Rooney of Thompson arrived late to the speedway and started the 602 sportsman feature at the rear of the field. He methodically raced his way into the lead and claimed his first win of 2014. Shane Wolf of Susquehanna made it two wins in a row in the street stocks with Eric Beach winning for the second time in the factory stocks. Defending champion Kenny Underwood made it two in a row in the four cylinder division. Joe Kata continued his dominance at Penn Can winning the CRSA sprint car feature coming from deep in the field.

Steve Babicek used his outside front row starting position to jump out to the early lead in the modified thirty lap feature event. Brian Malcolm, Adam MacGeorge, and Billy Thornton swapped positions early in the going trying to Chase down Babicek. The action was hot during the first third of the race with Kenny Titus, Mike Schane, and Allan Rudalavage working their way to the front. A rash of mid race cautions kept the field tight with Babicek, Malcolm, Kevin Hartnett, Dan Pompey, Ken Titus, and MacGeorge rounding out the top seven at the halfway mark.

As the race continued to unfold Babicek and Malcolm were battling side by side for the top spot with Hartnett, Pompey, and Titus fighting for their positions behind the leaders. Hartnett moved past Malcolm on lap twenty six in turn one and then caught Babicek in turn on lap twenty seven only to see the caution come out. With three remaining Babicek took off on the green with Hartnett following. Hartnett slid under in turn two and took the lead. He held off the challenges for the last two laps to win for the second time this season. Babicek held on for second followed by Pompey, Titus and a late charging Nick Rochiski.

The 602 sportsman feature saw rookie Alec Gennarelli take command of the feature during the early stages of the race. Cautions plagued the first quarter of the race but Genneralli stayed out front withstanding the challenges of Brian Mady, Nick Branning, Nick Mady, and Rany Gates. A lap four tangle at the front of the field collected seven of the top running cars. After the clean-up almost all were able to rejoin the race. Genneralli picked up where he left off gaining a four car advantage on the field. Paul Rooney, Gates, and newcomer Lance Albanese were now the main challengers coming to the halfway mark. Disaster struck for Genneralli as a lapped machine spun and the leader had nowhere to go and his comfortable lead and race ended on the hook. Rooney assumed the top spot and went on to win over Gates, Dusty Barton, Albanese, and Ryan Olsommer.

The CRSA sprints made their first of three visits to the Penn Can oval Friday. A strong field of seventeen sprinter cars signed into the pits to compete in their twenty five lap feature. Bill Jaycox and Jeremy Quickwere the early leaders in a race with very few cautions. The man on the move was eleventh starting Joe Kato. Kato has had the CRSA drivers covered at Penn Can winning twice last season. He took his time passing high and low gaining the lead on the nineteenth circuit. He cruised home for another Penn Can victory ahead of Bill Jaycox, Jeremy Quick, Chuck Alessi, Jordan Thomas, and Scott Goodrich.

Shane Wolf continued to be hot in the street stocks winning for the second week in a row, The ninth starting Wolf gained the lead early and withstood the all challenges. Steve Deinhardt, Randy Fox, Ryan Stone, Ray Lindquist, and Matt Spencer rounded out the top six.

Another great field of factory stocks lined up for their fifteen lap event with Eric Beach holding of Mike Morse, Buck Mills Sr, and Buck Mills Jr for the hard fought win.

The four cylinder feature was another thrilling event with eventual winner Kenny Underwood making his way through the pack passing John Maynard for the lead. Underwood stayed out front while Maynard, Mike Robinson, Dylan Robinson, Andy Brigham, andDon Doster Jr fought for positions behind the defending track champion.

PENN NOTES: Weather was beautiful for the six division show. All qualifying and the six features were competed by eleven. Before racing began Mike Nagel Jr brought his car to the track to grant a wish by nine year old Rory who is dealing with a terminal illness. His wish was to ride in a race car driven by Nagel. It was a very emotional moment for all in attendance. Mike Colsten debuted a new modified prepared for him by his crew to celebrate his induction into the DIRT Hall of Fame in July.
