Godown Beats Van Horn in New Egypt Mother’s Day Thriller

New Egypt, NJ (May 10, 2014) – 2012 champion Ryan Godown of Ringoes, NJ won the 30 lap feature Saturday at New Egypt Speedway in thrilling fashion over David Van Horn. Godown won the final restart with 9 laps remaining, and then held off a major challenge from Van Horn with three laps remaining to win his third event at NES this year. “I tip my hat to the track crew tonight and the speedway management.” Stated Godown in victory lane, “It would have been easy to just call the show off after that rain hit late this afternoon, but they stuck with it and rewarded the fans that came out with a great race!”

Following a two hour delay to the start of the program due to a heavy thunderstorm hitting the track at 4:30pm, Speedway management decided to go with a features only program with more rain in the area. PJ Oliver grabbed the lead on the initial start only to spin in turn four bunching up the field for another try. When the green flew again, new pole sitter Tim Apgar charged to the lead chased by veteran Doug Ostwald and John Stangle. Apgar stretched his lead early as Van Horn quickly sliced thru traffic and ran down Apgar. Van Horn slid by Apgar on lap 14 to assume command and then had to survive several restarts over the next three laps. On lap 18, Godown raced into second followed by Billy Pauch in third, however Van Horn had the hot set-up as he continued to set the pace. With 9 laps remaining, third place Pauch stopped in turn 3 with a flat tire bringing out the races final caution. The ensuing restart saw Godown time the restart perfectly winning the drag race into turn one and sweeping around the cushion into the lead. But Van Horn was not finished as he closed back in on the leader with 5 laps remaining and then starting pulling alongside of Godown on every turn. The big challenge came in turn 4 with three laps left, as Van Horn slid under Godown with the two cars rubbing nerf bars. Godown seemed to bounce over the cushion, but never lifted out of the throttle and was able to power back around Van Horn as they exited the turn back to a 3 car length advantage. Van Horn used the final 3 laps to reel Godown back in but ran out of time for another battle. Danny Bouc drove a strong race coming home third as Pauch drove all the way back thru the field to capture fourth. Willie Osmun rounded out the top five.

The NERS 305 Sprints 20 lap event saw Tim Tanner Jr. win for the second time in three events as he maintained the point lead. Phil Meisner Jr. ran a close second but could never muster a serious challenge. Mike Haggen bottom, Justin Hoffman, and Neal Williams completed the top five.

The Sportsman 20 lapper was taken by Mike Lyons of Monroe Twp., NJ. Lyons held off a mid-race challenge from Mike Butler and then a late race charge from defending champ Bob Lineman Jr. to win the 20th feature of his career at NES. Lineman crossed the line second trailed by Brisan Roemer, Johnny Cornell and Butler.

The HCI/SpikeNGo Rookie Sportsman Series 5 lap feature event was taken Kevin Dale for his first ever win. Branden Clauss was second and Derek Krum finished third.

As a Thank You to all of the fans who came out to support the speedway despite the rain, and then sat thru the long delay to start the program, owner Fred Vahlsing and speedway management announced to the crowd that anyone bringing their wristband back with them next Saturday night, will receive 50% off of their general admission ticket!

Next Saturday, May 17, it is NASCAR Night at New Egypt Speedway. Anyone wearing their favorite NASCAR drivers apparel will receive $3 off general admission, while purchasing a NASCAR Day pin will get you $5 off your admission. The offers cannot be combined. The 358 Modifieds get the week off, as the ARDC Midgets return for the second time, joined by the Crate Modifieds and the Street Stocks. It will also be the first Demo Derby of the 2014 season. Gates will open at 4:00 p.m. with the first race starting at 6:00 pm.
