ADAM MACGEORGE WINS MODIFIED FEATURE…KEVIN HARTNETT REPEATS AS CHAMPION
Susquehanna, PA…The racing action Friday at the annual Pump-N-Pantry Championship Night at Penn Can Speedway lived up to all expectations. A large crowd was on hand to see some of the most exciting racing of the season on the smooth three eighths mile clay oval. While all eyes were on the three man modified championship battle, Adam MacGeorge of Montrose had his Chris Gennarelli owned modified on a rail the entire thirty five lap distance to claim his first win of the season. In the 602 sportsman division Todd Titus of Kirkwood, New York lead from the start and held off all challengers to win for the first time in his rookie season at Penn Can. Steve Deinhardt of Deposit, New York has been strong all season in the street stocks. Friday he would spin early in the race and restart at the end of the twenty car field only to work his way back to the front and claim another win and the season championship. Eric Beach was the point leader coming into action Friday because of his strong season-long campaign. Friday would be more of the same as he won for the tenth time. The four cylinders had a tight point battle going into the final race. Dylan Robinson trailed Don Doster by five points. When the checkered flag flew, Robinson won with Doster second making them co-champions. Tim Frantz finished where he needed to in the Xcel 600 race as he was second in points. Will Eastman did the same finishing where he needed to to claim the championship over Frantz.
Steve Babicek brought the modified field to the green and vaulted out to the early lead. The first of only two cautions came on lap three for a stalled car in turn one. On the restart Adam MacGeorge pulled into second pressuring Babicek for the top spot. MacGeorge pulled to the outside of the speedway on the sixth circuit to power into the lead with Babicek second followed by Bob Trapper, Billy Thornton, and Dan Pompey. The crowd was watching the point battle between Thornton, Kevin Hartnett, and Alan Rudalavage. With ten fifteen in the books MacGeorge lead with Thornton moving into third and Hartnett taking the fifth spot. The action stay hot with battles all through the back. At the halfway point MacGeorge was out front followed by Trapper, Thornton, Babicek, Hartnett, and Pompey.
The final caution came out when the car of Alan Rudalavage slowed with a flat tire sending him pitside for a change of rubber. With the green back out MacGeorge and Trapper battled side by side for the top spot with Thornton, Babicek, and Hartnett in tow. With five laps remaining the order remained the same with action still happening throughout the pack. MacGeorge held strong and won the championship night feature with Trapper second followed across the line by Thornton, Nick Rochinski, Babicek, Hartnett, and Pompey. Officials penalized Rochinski two spots for jumping on the final caution placing him sixth in the finishing order. With Thornton finishing third and Hartnett fifth, Hartnett claimed his third Penn Can championship by six points over Thornton.
Todd Titus has been learning the ropes all season in the 602 sportsman division. The learning curve had its ups and downs all season. Friday Titus put it all together holding strong over the twenty five lap distance to win his first ever career feature at Penn Can Speedway. Titus had his hands full all race long. Cautions hindered his progress and wiped out leads late in the race. He also had veterans Randy Gates and Ryan Olsommer on his heels along with rookie Alec Gennarelli throughout the later stages of the race. Titus hit all of his makes and held of Gates on a late race restart to get the feature win.
A large field of street stocks signed in for action Friday Ryan Stone jumped from his outside starting position to take the early lead followed by Randy Fox, Butch Green, and Steve Deinhardt. Disaster stuck point leader Deinhardt with his mount spinning on lap four. The field regrouped and Stone continued out front. Cautions during the first half of the feature kept the cars tight lap after lap. At the halfway point, Stone lead Green, Fox and the hard charging Deinhardt. Deinhardt moved to second on lap sixteen and motored under Stone to take command on lap eighteen. Deinhardt kept the car in front and took the win and the championship. Green was second followed across by Stone, Fox and Josh Butler.
Eric Beach has been the man to beat this season in the factory stocks. With the title already decided Beach again was the man to beat. Former track champion Georgie Brown made his return to the speedway and gave Beach all he could handle. Beach was up the the challenge and won for the tenth time this year at Penn Can.
The four cylinder point championship was tight between Don Doster and Dylan Robinson with Doster having only a five point lead. Robinson and Doster put on an epic battle for fifteen laps with Robinson taking the win. Doster’s second place finish and Robinson’s win made the two tied in points and declared co-champions in 2014.
The Xcel point battle had Jamie Frantz second trailing Will Eastman by only fourteen points going into the feature event. Frantz would do everything he needed by winning the race and getting the most points available. Eastman would have to finish fifth or better to seal the championship with Frantz winning. Eastman brought his car home third claiming enough points to win the season long championship.
