BILLY THORNTON USES PATIENTS TO WIN MODIFIED FEATURE AT PENN CAN SPEEDWAY

Susquehanna, Pa…The grandstands were packed on a picture perfect night for racing at Penn Can Speedway on Adams Cable Service Night. The track played host to the annual bicycle give-away and the young fans could not have been happier as over one hundred twenty shiny new bikes were give away to the youngsters. The racing on the speedway was just as exciting with Old Forge, PA native Billy Thornton patiently moved his modified from his sixth starting position to the lead and went on to win the thirty lap feature event. In the 602 sportsman main Ryan Olsommer, of Canadensis, won for the second time this season. The street stock feature was another thrilling battle of the best with Ryan Stone of Great Bend winning for the first time this season. Eric Beach and Ted Mills Jr were winners in the two factory stock features with Don Doster claiming his second four cylinder victory. Tim Frantz returned to the winner’s circle in the Xcel modifieds.

Mike Schane jumped to the lead in the early stages of the modified feature with rookie Mike Loney close behind. The first of only two cautions in the event came out on lap five when Adam MacGeorge jumped a wheel and spun in turn two. MacGeorge fired and returned with Schane out front followed closely by Loney, Joey Colsten, Billy Thornton, and Brian Malcolm.

Schane kept his car out front as Thornton started his move to the front. Methodically Thorton passed car after car. He took to the high side of the speedway and chased down Schane for the lead on lap thirteen. As the cross flags were displayed, Thornton led Schane, Colsten, Loney, and Mike Nagel. The final caution of the event came on lap twenty four for the disabled car of Brian Malcolm. When racing continued, Thornton held off all challenges for the win. Schane, Colsten, Al Rudalavage, and Kevin Hartnett rounded out the top five.

Rookie 602 sportsman driver Todd Titus was the early show in the twnty lap feature parking his car out front for over half of the twenty lap event. Ryan Olsommer started in the back of the pack and made his way through taking control on lap fourteen. A late race caution bunched the field with another first year driver, Alec Genneralli moving into second to pressure for the lead. Olsommer held off the challenge and won for the season time this season. Genneralli came across second in his best out of 2014. He was followed by another rookie in the division, Nick Mady, Frank Bonham, and Brian Mady.

Ryan Stone jumped from his sixth starting position to take the lead early followed by some of the area’s best street stock drivers. Jon Carpenter, Steve Deinhardt, Randy Fox, and Shane Wolf Jr all swapped positions lap after lap trying to chase down Stone. Their efforts failed as Stone came out first ahead of Steve Deinhardt, Jon Carpenter, Randy Fox, Shane Wolf Jr, and Ray Lindquist.

The factory stocks had two feature for the night with both events coming down to the wire. In the first make-up event Ted Mills Jr held off Eric Beach for the win. In the nightcap the rolls reversed with Beach winning over Mills.

A large field of four cylindders took to the track for their fifteen lap feature. There was three and four wide racing over the entire distance with Don Doster coming out the winner over Dan Bryden, Mike Robinson, Kenny Underwood, Frank Kennedy, Andy Brigham, and John Maynard.

The Xcel 600 modifieds took to the track for their eighteen lap feature with Tim Frantz holding off Scott Adams, Will Eastman, Kailee Dimorier, and Jamie Frantz for his second win of the year.

PENN NOTES: Track conditions again made for great side by side racing with very few cautions in all divisions. Head flagger Gary Folk Jr coordinated the annual bicycle give-away and topped his previous record by distribution one hundred twenty seven bikes. As a result of a bet, Folk flagged the entire night of racing dressed in drag…the fans loved it. In a very classy move, 602 sportsman winner Ryan Olsommer apologized to the fans during his Victory Lane interview for his behavior on June 6th after having a penalty drop him out of a win.
