Billy Pauch Jr. Wins Second in a Month at New Egypt
New Egypt, NJ (August 9, 2014) – Billy Pauch Jr. of Frenchtown, NJ recorded his second win in four weeks Saturday night as he captured the 30 lap Modified feature at New Egypt Speedway. Pauch Jr. raced from his 16th starting position to the lead in just 7 laps and went on to post his second win of the season by 4 seconds over point leader Ryan Godown.
DJ Ruppert assumed command at the start of the event over Doug Ostwald only to have a 4 car pile-up in turn two immediately slow the action. Involved in this accident was 6-time champ Billy Pauch Sr., who was the only car that needed wrecker service with damage to the left front of his racer. Several other cars were involved in this crash that did not stop on the track, but were forced pit side for repairs, including current point leader Ryan Godown. The only car unable to return was heat winner Neal Williams, who had won the night before in Delaware. Pauch Sr. limped out of the pits for the restart, but spent the next two cautions in the pits continuing to try and fix his bent race car. Finally after he spun by himself due to the ill-handling of the car, he retired from the event. During these first 6 laps Kevin Vaclavicek and Sammy Piazza both brought out separate yellows and retired from the event due to residual damage from the lap one pile-up. Meanwhile, Pauch Jr. had driven the Holsten Racing #96 thru that accident and thru the field into second place by just lap 4. On lap 7, he powered by leader Ruppert and took control as Gary Butler & Danny Bouc tried to keep pace. By the halfway point, Godown had charged back thru the field and was into second and poised to challenge the younger Pauch, however Pauch Jr. had other ideas as he pulled away on the final restart and ran the final 11 laps uncontested for the win. His only tense moment was on the final lap, as his car began to sputter at the white flag starving for fuel. But he kept it running for the final lap, ultimately taking the checkered and then running out of fuel in turn one, needing a push truck to get him to victory lane. Godown capped his comeback drive with an impressive second place finish. A wild 3-car battle for third was won by Danny Bouc as he captured third ahead of Tad Cox and Willie Osmun.
Jason Dunn of Trenton, NJ won his first career Sportsman event in the 20 lap feature. Dunn controlled most of the evening as he also won his qualifying heat race as well. Dunn scored the popular win, holding off a late charge by JT Trstensky over the final five laps. Mike Howardson finished third, Bob Lineman fourth and Johnny Cornell rounded out the top five.
Mike Butler of Milford, NJ won his third feature of the season in a special non-point Crate Modified race. Butler, the division point leader this year, passed the Carman brothers about halfway thru the 20 lap race and drove to the victory. Brian Papiez finished second trailed by Chuck Steuer, Matt Carman and Mike Carman.
Next Saturday, August 16, It will be Country Western Night with Crate Modifieds, NERS 305 Sprint Cars and Street Stocks in competition. There will also be a Demo Derby at the end of the evening. Gates will open at 4:00 p.m. with the first race starting at 6:00 pm.
