Abbottstown, PA (September 25, 2020) – Friday night kicked off the 2020 Dirt Nationals at Lincoln Speedway. The first night consisted of time trials and heat races for the Young Lions, Semi-Pros, Masters and Pros. In total 81 U.S. Legend cars were on hand to compete in the two-day event.

The marquee event on Friday was the 30-lap Legends Race of Champions. Jay Quenzer lined up on the pole with Jonathan Robinson to his outside.

Robinson led lap 1 as Quinn Trimmer and Scott Houdeshell battled for second. Seventh-place starter Houdeshell took second and went to work on Robinson for the lead. Houdeshell took the lead coming out of turn 2 on the second lap. McClelland followed moving into second.

Stephen Wurtzer challenged Robinson for third. The two raced side by side for the spot with Wurtzer taking it on lap 4.

Houdeshell tried to pull away from McClelland and the rest of the field but McClelland and Wurtzer were closing in on the leader.

McClelland caught Houdeshell and was all over him for the lead. McClelland was getting a good run out of the turns and nearly got his nose under Houdeshell. Wurtzer was right there as well trying to get his nose under McClelland for the runner-up spot.

A lapped car came into play on lap 15 but didn’t slow down the leaders.

Wurtzer got his nose under McClelland to no avail in turns 3 and 4.

Houdeshell created some distance between McClelland and Wurtzer with 10 laps to go.

The caution came out on lap 23 for Quinn Trimmer who got spun around in turn 2. Trimmer rejoined the field.

Houdeshell led McClelland, Wurtzer, Clanton and Sullivan to the cone for the single file restart.

Clanton looked to the outside of Wurtzer to take third and took the spot out of turn 4 on lap 24.

McClelland took a look to the inside of Houdeshell for the lead allowing Clanton to try a move for second but McClelland held the spot.

Clanton got under McClelland down the back stretch for second and the two raced door to door at the white flag.

Houdeshell crossed the line .408 seconds ahead of Clanton for the Race of Champions victory. McClelland finished third and Wurtzer was fourth. Ryan Sullivan completed the top five.

Garrett Bard Charges to 305 Victory

Garret Bard lined up fourth for the 20-lap feature on Friday night. Bard charged to the front early in the race to complete the sweep of the 305 feature events at Lincoln in 2020. Bard also won in the 305 sprint series’ visit to the track in July. Bard’s win on Friday was his eighth with the PASS series this year.

Ken Duke and Devin Adams shared the front row for the feature event with Dave Grubell and Bard lined up in row 2.

Duke led the field into turn 1 with Adams going to the high side to challenge Duke for the lead. Duke held the top spot while Bard moved his way to third.

Bard used the outside of turns 1 and 2 to get by Adams for the second spot.

The yellow flag flew on lap 2 for Dave Wickham and Andrew Boyer who got together at the end of the front stretch.

Duke led Bard, Adams, Grubell and Justin Mills to the cone for the restart.

Bard went to the top in turn 1 and Duke slid up in turn 2 to take away his line. Bard dove into turn 3 to take lead at the line right before the red came out on lap 3. Jake Frye jumped the cushion and got upside down in turns 3 and 4.

This time Bard paced the field ahead of Duke, Adams, Grubell and Mills for the restart.

Bard shot out to a commanding lead on the restart. Mills got by Grubell for fourth but Grubell took the spot back at the line on lap 4. The two continued to battle with Mills solidly taking the position on lap 5.

Bard used the high line around the track as he caught the tail end of the field with a 1.5 second lead.

Adams found some speed and was all over Duke for second. The two raced side by side into turn 3 on lap 10 with Adams having the slight advantage at the line.

Adams went to work tracking down Bard for the lead in lapped traffic. Adams closed the gap in lapped traffic with 5 laps to go.

Bard forced to the bottom as he worked through lapped traffic allowing Adams to gain some ground. Bard was able to put a lapped car between him and Adams to create some distance but Adams made quick work of it.

Adams made one last effort for the lead in turns 3 and 4 and raced with Bard to the checkered flag down the front stretch. Bard beat Adams to the line by .137 seconds. Duke finished third and Mills crossed the line fourth. Darek Hauck completed the top five.

305 Sprint heat races were won by Garrett Bard, Ken Duke Jr. and Jake Frye.

On Thursday, October 17, Lincoln Speedway is back in action with the Night of Champions for the 410 and 358 sprints. Action starts at 6:00PM with pit gates open at 3:30PM and grandstand gates opening at 4:00PM.
