(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) Jonathan Brown showed up on
Saturday to make a statement at Bowman Gray Stadium.
He claimed the checkered in the O’Reilly Auto Parts 100 for the Brad’s
Golf Cars Modified Series – and with double points on the line, Brown
moves up from fourth to second in points standings.
Lee Jeffreys of Wallburg was the fastest qualifier and opted to take on
the Fans’ Challenge, starting in the rear for a chance to win $3,000.
When the remaining competitors drew for starting position, Jason Myers
of Walnut Cove and former champ Danny Bohn of Huntersville were set to
start first and second.
On the initial start – and for the first two double-file restarts –
Jason Myers held off Danny Bohn to maintain the lead. In their final
battle, Myers and Bohn made contact – knocking Bohn off the pace enough
to get him caught on the outside row. Bohn fell back while Jonathan
Brown of Winston-Salem moved up to second.
Brown took the first opportunity he got to choose the outside during a
restart, hoping to steal the lead away from Myers. As the two tangled,
they collided. Jonathan Brown began to spin, but Myers himself lost
control and started a pileup. With the track blocked due to the
wreckage, Jonathan Brown had just enough time to slam the gas and steer
into the lead. James Civali moved into second.
Civali began immediately pressuring Brown, hammering his bumper at
every possible chance. Defending champ Burt Myers of Walnut Cove moved
up to third and raced back and forth with Civali for second. Myers
briefly claimed second until a stiff shot from an aggressive Civali
relegated him back to third.

The car of Civali slowed as the race went on, with Myers repeatedly
shoving his bumper. Brown took the opportunity to distance himself from
Civali and Myers. With no restarts coming in the final 20 laps of the
race, Myers wasn’t given a chance to line up double-file with Civali.
Brown took the win. Civali finished second, with Myers taking third.
“This is a very emotional win – the first time I’ve won as a car
owner,” said Brown. “We’ve worked our butts off on this car. Everybody
else took a break and didn’t work on their stuff for two weeks. We took
this thing down to a bare chassis, put it together – we didn’t even
practice this morning because we knew we had a hot rod.”
Brown feels confident that he would still be in Victory Lane even if
Civali’s car had held strong or even if Burt Myers would’ve passed
Civali and began to challenge Brown for the lead. “Even if Burt would’ve
been second, I would’ve gapped them – this things was good,” said Brown.
“I wasn’t running but about 40% the whole race, and these boys got their
hands full the rest of the season.”
In the McDowell Heating & Air Sportsman Series, Dylan Ward of
Winston-Salem held off Justin Taylor of Kernersville to take the victory
for the first 20-lapper. That brings his winning streak to an impressive
four weeks in a row. Ross Dalton of Liberty claimed the checkered in the
second Sportsman race.
Corey Rose of Trinity was the winner of the 20-lapper for the Law
Offices of John Barrow Street Stock Series. And in the Q104.1 Stadium
Stock Series, Brandon Brendle of Winston-Salem and Joel Stewart of
Mocksville each brought home a victory trophy.
