Newberrytown, PA (February 7, 2015) – The Night of Honor and Awards Banquet for the Susquehanna Speedway Park’s 2014 season on Friday night, February 6 was filled with an atmosphere of fun, music, enthusiasm and anticipation for the 2015 season.  This was the largest crowd to attend the speedway’s season ending banquet.  Fourteen track champions were crowned and added to the prestigious SSP Hall of Champions list that includes racing great such as Bobby Abel, Johnny Mackison Sr., Gene Goodling, Ray Tilley and Mitch Smith to name a few.

The Awards Gala was held at the historic Valencia Ballroom in downtown York, Pennsylvania in front of a full house of drivers, teams, sponsors and supporters of the various classes that competed at SSP last season.  Music before and after the ceremonies was provided by Professional DJ, Daniel Boone.  The banquet placed SSP’s grassroots racers on center stage after celebrating the track’s 6oth year of operation, the eleventh season under the Fishers.

The Late Model division crowned J.R. Rodriguez of Dover for first time in his career at SSP.  Rodriguez collected four feature victories on his way to the championship and adding his name to the “Billet Cup.”  Randy Christine Jr. had five victories and finished second in the points battle.  Rookie Late Model driver Cameron Benyou finished third in the point standings, followed by Matt Murphy and Steve Billet rounding out the top five.

The “Billet Cup” features all the past SSP Late Model Champions.  Throughout the season, the Cup will be on display at the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing in York Springs, PA (www.emmr.org).  The Cup was named in honor of the late Carl Billet who passed away one day after last year’s SSP banquet.  Billet was a seven-time Late Model Champion with 57 career feature wins at SSP.

Myerstown’s Scottt Thunberg collected his third SSP Street Stock championship in the past three decades.  Thunberg finished 20 points ahead of runner-up Jasen Geesaman.  Jimmy Combs finished the season-long points chase in third with Chris Derr and Wayne Dutterer Jr. finishing fourth and fith places respectively.

Patrick McClane of York won six Xtreme Stock Car feature races to claim his third career Xtreme Stock Car championship.  The battle with Davey Nester came down to the final race of the season with McClane besting Nester to claim the title by a tiebreaker with the most wins in the season.  Todd Knaub finished in third, followed by Johnny Palma and Matt Wampler in fourth and fifth places.

The Madison House East Recovery Homes Season Hard Charger award went to John Frye which was decided by a tiebreaker with Johnny Palm to determine the winner.  The tiebreaker was the most positions gained in one race as Frye gained 17 spots in one race and Palm gained 16 spots.  Both drivers received a monetary award for their efforts.  It was also announced that the Madison House East Hard Charger awards will continue weekly in 2015 for the fourth consecutive season.

York Haven’s Daryl Sipe claimed his third Road Warrior track championship over Curt McDade who finished second.  Ricky Weaver Jr. finished third followed by Tim O’Sheehan and Travis Brown.

York Haven’s Zakari Kitner claimed the Mini Van Championship over Richard Wolfe.  Other SSP track champions honored on Friday night were Daryl Kump II (Figure 8 Racing), Matt Wallace (Classic Cars), Brian Gagliardo (PENNMAR Vintage Cars); Mike Wagner (PASS Sprint Cars); Brett Kressley (Sportsman Modifieds); Rohan Beasley (Sidewinder Sprints) and Chandler Leiby (358 Sprint Cars).

In special awards, Tony Sipling, Angie Sipling, Kylie Glatfelter and Brenda Nace were also recognized by the Fishers’ as 5-year SSP employees.  Mark Hutchison and Cameron Benyoue were recognized for winning the Auto Racing Club of Hagerstown Sportsmanship Awards.

Before the awards presentation, Todd Fisher, owner/promoter of the Susquehanna Speedway Park, gave his annual “State of the Speedway” address. Fisher began by reflecting on the past eleven years and thanked the many supporters of the speedway during those years.  Fisher also touched on the upcoming 2015 schedule and its special events as well as some rule changes for 2015.

The 2015 season opener at the Susquehanna Speedway Park will be on Saturday, April 4, with the Late Models, Street Stocks, Legends Cars and Super Sportsman Tour.  All point championships for each class starts on April 4.
