MALTA, N.Y. – July 24, 2015 – Back into the cockpit of the Speed’s Garage No. 24 after recent heart stent surgery, Pro Stock veteran Robbie Speed of Mellenville, N.Y., finds himself going faster on and off the track.
Speed earned $1,000 by winning the 35-lap DIRTcar NE Pro Stock Series event Friday at Albany-Saratoga.
He started sixth, benefitted from two early restarts, and took the lead for keeps on lap nine after dicing with Brandon Emigh. He had a healthy lead negated by another caution on lap 23 and then fended off Bernie Companion on the ensuing restart.
Companion finished second ahead of Chuck Dumblewski, Kenny Martin and Stephane Lebrun.
Six weeks ago, Speed, 50, was being wheeled into the operating room to have stent inserted into his heart.
“I was feeling really run down,” Speed said. “My wife was having trouble with allergies and I thought that was maybe my problem, but then I started having chest pain at the track. Now I’ve lost 30 pounds and I’ve got energy to spare.”
Speed says he’s already looking forward to the next DIRTcar NE Pro Stock Series event – Cornwall Speedway September, 6 where he plans to compete with the help of crew chief Scott Carl and sponsors Meltz Lumber, River Station Restaurant, Ghent Wood Products, A. Colarusso and Son and the UPS Store of Hudson.
Thirty-four Pro Stocks were at Albany-Saratoga attempting to qualify for the third event of the 2015 DIRTcar NE Series. The winners of the first two races were Pete Broderson/Fonda and Dave Bissonette/Le RPM.
