The 3rd Annual Gerald Haers Memorial presented by Phelps Cement Products and MP Delivery at Land Of Legends Raceway may be remembered as much for the massive $64,000 pot paid out as for The Man himself.

For Waterloo feature race winners Matt Sheppard and Matt Guererri, lucrative victories in the dynamic DIRTcar doubleheader that attracted 83 open-wheel entries were among the biggest of their open-wheel careers in Canandaigua.

From a record-shattering single-day Pepsi Big-Block Modified prize package that ballooned to well over $55,000 on race day, Sheppard pocketed more than $11,000 in cash and contingencies for his 83rd career Super DIRTcar Series victory, his 85th Big-Block trophy at the hallowed Ontario Co. Fairgrounds half-miler.

In the Speed Connection Sportsman showdown, Guererri banked a cool $1-grand for his first-ever tour triumph, with bonuses worth an additional $250 that accompanied the 2021 DIRTcar Series Central Region Championship claimed outright by seventh-place finisher Matt Janczuk for a second straight season.

“Don’t know if we were fantastic but we were pretty darn good,” remarked Sheppard, 39, after leading 98 of the 100-lap Modified main en route to capturing the 50th SDS race staged at the fairgrounds since 1976. “Had a really good starting spot tonight and sometimes that’s what it takes.”

“Gotta talk about Gerald Haers, this race is for him. Justin and myself, think we raced together for about 30 years since go-carts. Gerald was always there every step of the way. What a great tribute to an awesome guy,” remarked Sheppard, recalling his long-time camaraderie with Justin Haers, crowned Canandaigua’s Big-Block Mod points champion for the first time just three weeks earlier.

In a poignant pre-race ceremony celebrating the life of Gerald Haers that culminated with young members of the Haers family commanding drivers to start their engines, 29 cars lining the frontstretch fired up to the delight of the capacity crowd.

Sheppard quickly reminded everyone in attendance why he is rated among the best in the entire Northeast, charging past pole-sitter Tim Fuller on lap three and keeping his potent #9s Hurlock Auto&Speed-Westmoreland Golf Glub-St.Lawrence Radiology/Bicknell entry out front the remainder of the way to register his 25th victory of the 2021 campaign.

Past LOLR points champion Billy Decker bumped his way past Fuller on a lap 21 restart and shadowed Sheppard for the distance, although the ‘Franklin Flyer’ was forced to settle for second-place 10 car-lengths back when the final checkered flag flew. After a brief stint in the runner-up slot, Larry Wight, Decker’s Gypsum teammate and Canandaigua’s high-point man last summer, rallied to take third in the century grind.

Four-time Canandaigua Sportsman champ Dave Marcuccilli earned a $500 Cost Plus Processing Triple 20 heat race win then pocketed another $750 after copping the Knapp & Schlappi Lumber Co. cash dash. Unfortunately for the Montezuma driver, his familiar blue #M1 mount came to stop in turn four to incur the first yellow flag and end his night with just four laps complete in the feature.

Sheppard continued to show his superiority back under green, keeping Decker and Fuller comfortably in his rear-view while 2020 Haers Memorial winner Chris Hile and returning veteran Danny Johnson filled the front-five a third of the way through. Relegated to 16th starting position after salvaging the sixth and final qualifying spot in his heat, Wight displaced Hile by lap 35 with LOLR regulars Peter Britten and 14th starting Haers moving in to contend right behind at the halfway mark.

While the lead group held their own up front, 15th starting Ronnie Davis III was the man on the move, cracking the top-10 by lap 60 and slipping past Erick Rudolph for fifth before the seventh and final caution period for Marcus Dinkins on lap 90 changed the outcome. On the ensuing lap 91 restart Davis’ tires suddenly sealed up, dropping the East Syracuse invader to 12th in the final rundown yet affording him the Scott Jeffery’s Performance Plus Hard Luck Award worth $300.

With a clear track ahead on the last restart with 10 laps to go, ‘Super Matt’ had no trouble pulling away from the pack as his victory margin over Decker was 1.3-sec. at the stripe. Wight followed another second back while inaugural Haers Memorial victor Rudolph and Fuller crossed the line next. Haers, Britten, Jack Lehner, Canandian standout and Sportsmanship Award winner Mat Williamson, and Hile rounded out the Top-10 under chief starter Dave Farney’s final checkered flag.

“I knew Billy had a lot of speed all night, he was making me pretty nervous back there,” disclosed Sheppard, after extending his SDS points lead over Decker in quest of an eighth tour title on the Northeast’s premier Big-Block circuit. His fourth series points win of ’21 was also his fourth victory this season at LOLR where he is a nine-time points champion.

“And I knew he was back there, knew he was close, but didn’t know exactly where he was or the lane he was running. For awhile there in the middle of the race didn’t really even know where I wanted to run. Kinda glad to see those cautions at the end so we could get some open race track and I could just use the momentum to keep this thing rolling.”

“Tried a little something at Weedsport last week and it worked for us so we brought the same exact thing here tonight. Think we could’ve tweaked on it a little bit but it was still pretty darn good,” smiled Sheppard, on the heals of a second straight SDS win in 14 starts.

Himself an 18-time feature winner at the fairgrounds, with four coming in SDS competition, Decker registered his third successive top-5 finish to remain second to only Sheppard in the overall series points picture.

“Think Matt was a little bit better than us in turns 1&2, when I hit 3&4 really good we might’ve been a tick better than him there,” figured Decker, who won both Canandaigua’s crown and Mr. DIRT Championship in 1998, then garnered two more tour titles in 2008 and 2014. On Saturday he also earned a guaranteed starting spot in the Billy Whittaker Cars 200 slated for Sun. Oct. 10 of  NAPA Super DIRT Week XLIX at Oswego Speedway.

“On that long green we seemed to level out a little bit and get into a chase. But on those restarts he just drove away. All and all the car was pretty good. We’ve been gaining but we need a win, need one bad,” stated Decker, who ranks fourth all-time behind Sheppard with 70 career series victories since posting his first on the now defunct Syracuse Mile in 1992.

Currently hovering inside the Top-10 in Series points, Wight’s third-place tally was just his second tour finish among the front-five in 2021.

“We’ve been struggling a little bit with these new cars,” admitted Wight, who scored all five of his Big-Block wins at Canandaigua en route the 2020 track championship. “We were good last year then all of a sudden we kinda hit a dead spot. Don’t know if everybody caught up to us and got ahead or we just made the wrong choices on car set-up and maybe shock packages. Just don’t know. But I think we finally regrouped here at the end of the year with these big races coming up.”
 
“Would’ve liked to see us get into some lapped traffic out there tonight. We were able to catch up to Matt there around halfway when we got into lapped cars but when he’s got open track its gonna be really tough to catch him let alone try to make a move and pass. There was a lot of bite low so when I was coming up through seemed like I was the only one that could make it work down there. Figured I’d just ride around and save my tires for the end,” added Wight, who was named Mark Webb Motorsports/A+ Superior Services Hard Charger and rewarded with a combined $400 for his effort chronicled during the 50-mile main.

Super DIRTcar Series ’21 gets back on track Sat., Sept. 25 when the touring stars converge on Albany-Sarataga Speedway in New York’s Capital Region. Sheppard (3,222), Decker (3,104), Britten (3,084), Rudolph (3,060) and Williamson (3,060) top the current points chart after 14 events and lead the touring troup downstate for another $10,000-to-win 100-lap Big-Block Modified main that closes out Malta Massive Weekend.

The NE Sportsman Series feature needed a longer distance to decide yet after 30 laps the outcome was quite similar with a younger Matt from Waterloo taking the top prize in the open-wheel affair. This time it was Guererri matching his Modified mentor in the trusty #12G Tradition Automotive Group-Product 9-Mohawk Northeast/Bicknell machine carrying the now two-time track champion to a narrow victory over weekly nemesis Zach Sobotka.

“The car was good, the track was fast and you could race all over it,” declared Guererri, 31, on the heels of his 14th career win in Canandaigua, the third of the season in wine country. “Just nice to be able to finish out the year this way.”

“This one’s for Gerald, great to see all these people come out. The Haers family put in so much work for this race. Every year it gets bigger and bigger, so to win on this night really means a lot,” Guererri said.

The 38-car field that signed in for the final ‘Saturday Spectacular’ of the season was reduced to 30 for the feature with Guererri falling in tenth after top heat race qualifiers redrew for starting positions. Following a decisive win in the second of four Proctor Enterprises preliminaries and then taking the 4-lap Always Locked Self Storage Cash Dash, Sobotka’s good fortune continued as the Parish pilot selected the #1 pill come feature time.

Sobotka shot out at the drop of the initial green flag, out-dragging front row partner Tim Baker to kick off the 15-mile main. While a broken right-rear hub sidelined Tyler Corcoran in his heat, misfortune struck once more as carburetor issues forced the near season-long Central Region leader and LOLR’s Aug. 4 tour winner off the pace and pitside just four laps into the pivotal points race.

Back under green Sobotka regained a comfortable advantage ahead of Daryl Nutting, last year’s LOLR OktoberFAST winner Tyler Murray and Frank Guererri Jr. Tim Lafler slid over the edge of the track in turn two to slow down the field and on the ensuing lap 10 restart Matt Guererri bolted from fourth to second taking the high road.

At the midway mark the top trio of Sobotka, Guererri and Murray separated themselves from the field followed further back by Nutting and Chris Mackey. Contending points chaser Janczuk seemed stranded in eighth while a relentless Corcoran continued his march up through the pack.

Paul Guererri slowed rounding turns one and two to force out the final yellow flag with 10 laps still to go and it was on that last restart that Guererri made the winning move. Pulling alongside Sobotka entering turn four, Guererri edged past Sobotka across the stripe to lead lap 20 and held it through the first corner. In search of his fifth win of the year at LOLR, Sobotka never let Guererri out of sight, shadowing him until the very end only to fall .512-sec. shy at the stripe.

Making a beeline into the top-10 during the final five circuits, disaster yet again thwarted Corcoran’s best effort when the rear-end jack shaft failed in his no. 64 Halmar Int’l-Power Seal-Dirt Track Digest/Bicknell mount on the last lap, dropping the 19 year-old upstart to 22nd on the scoresheet and down to third on the final Central Region points chart.
 
Janczuk’s seventh-place tally wheeling his #33x Finish Line Designs-Fastline Performance-Billy Whittaker Cars & Trux/Bicknell car turned out to be good enough to defend his touring title, out-gaining 9th finishing Zach Payne, 856-835, followed by Corcoran (830), Mackey (826) and Mike Fowler (802).

“I wasn’t that good on the bottom but I could roll around on the outside and thankfully on that last restart Zach took the bottom,” added Guererri, after holding on for the thrilling two car-length triumph. “Don’t think that if I didn’t get him on the first lap back under green I was going to later on. He was really good. We just happened to get by him in turn one and I tried to block both lanes and it worked out for us.”

“I was an idiot at the end. Looked at the big screen coming off turn four and I saw his nose under me so I had to switch up on the last few laps and just tried to hold him behind me,” Guererri said.

Murray finished a second back followed closely by Mackey while Fowler rounded out the final top-5. Starting 18th on the grid, Janczuk received $200 for the combined NG Promotions/A+ Superior Services Hard Charger Award while Corcoran was the hands-down recipient of the S&B Tech Sales Hard Luck Award worth $100.

Continuing to strengthen the timely tribute to Jerry Haers, a long-time supporter of Land of Legends as well as an honorable Vietnam War Veteran, Saturday’s 50/50 beneficiary was the Disabled American Veterans organization, formed over 100 years ago on Sept. 25, 1920, at its first National Caucus held in Hamilton County Memorial Hall in Cincinnati, Ohio. Jerry Haers passed away two summers ago at the age of 74..

In the aftermath of World War I, disabled veterans in the United States found themselves seriously disadvantaged, with little governmental support. DAV was thus created by the Congress for disabled military veterans of all U.S. Armed Forces that helps them and their families through various means. Today, DAV has over one million members.

DAV remains a non-profit charity that provides a lifetime of support for veterans of all generations, annually helping them and their families in positive life-changing ways. The organization is also a leader in connecting veterans with meaningful employment, hosting job fairs and providing resources to ensure they have the opportunity to participate in the American Dream their sacrifices have made possible.
