(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) When you’re fighting for the points championship at Bowman Gray Stadium, it takes a strong car, lots of driving talent, and unshakeable nerves.
A little luck doesn’t hurt either.
Burt Myers of Walnut Cove started second on Saturday after the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series randomly drew for starting position. He went on to take the checkered in Saturday’s Midway Mobile Storage Modified 100.
Knowing that starting position would be determined by draw, Myers used the opportunity to experiment. “We tried some stuff in qualifying, and it didn’t work – but we knew we could try tonight,” said Myers, who ended up being the ninth fastest qualifier.
Qualifying times for Modified 100-lappers are crucial, however, in order to be eligible to take the Fans’ Challenge – where the top four qualifiers can choose to start in the rear for a chance at massive prize money.
Younger brother Jason Myers was instead the one burning up the track and qualifying the fastest, although he opted out of accepting the Fans’ Challenge and starting in the rear. Bobby Measmer of Conord and Randy Butner of Pfafftown were daring enough to take the Fan’s Challenge. Unfortunately, wrecks and mechanical problems kept them from fighting their way to the front and earning the prize money.
Jason Myers drew fourth as his start – right on his brother’s bumper. When the green flag fell, Burt Myers shot out past pole-starter Daniel Beeson of Kernersville to claim the lead. Jason Myers filed in behind Burt in second, and the brotherly conflict began.
Through eight double-file restarts, Jason Myers took to the outside to challenge his brother. Each time, Burt Myers was able to defend the lead. However, each restart certainly increased the pressure for Burt Myers.
“I tried to set a good pace and endure those 500 restarts we had,” said Burt Myers. “The first lap after cautions, I was really good. Then after we ran about three laps I’d start getting a little free – and then when we ran about 10 laps, I was really good. So it was going back and forth.”
Jason Myers gave a few stout shots to the bumper of Burt, but the #1 of Burt Myers held firm in the lead. “It’s so hot, so slick,” said Burt Myers. “Jason had a really good car. I just want to make sure I didn’t make a mistake and cost myself.”
Jason Myers ended up finishing second, with Brandon Ward of Winston-Salem taking third.
In the Texas Steak & Tap House Sportsman Series, Tommy Neal of Walkertown held off John Holleman of Winston-Salem to grab the win in the first 20-lapper. Andrew Durham of Winston-Salem motored past Derek Stoltz of Walkertown to steal away the lead and the win in the second race.
Jacob Creed of Dobson slipped by Bryan Sykes of Winston-Salem on the last lap to win the 20-lapper for the Law Offices of John Barrow Street Stock Series. In the Q104.1 Stadium Stock Series, Chuck Wall of Lexington and Brandon Brendle of Winston-Salem each claimed the checkered.
