PM_GTown_031216-0475NEWBERRYTOWN, PA- August 3, 2016- It’s a wide open game this Sunday, August 7, at Susquehanna Speedway.

For the first time since 2009, Modifieds return to the Newberrytown, Pa., oval in the ‘York County Nationals’ 50-lap event offering $5,000 to win from a purse structure of more than $25,000. The Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By VP event will be a “who’s-who” in Northeast racing. The winner is anyone’s guess!

This season in the STSS Velocita South Region there have been five winners in as many events run:

*Anthony Perrego (Montgomery, N.Y.) at Georgetown, Del., March 12

*Wade Hendrickson (Lawrenceville, N.J.) at Bridgeport, N.J., April 17

*Ryan Watt (Boyertown, Pa.) at Big Diamond, Pa., May 17

*Stewart Friesen (Sprakers, N.Y.) at Delaware International, Del., May 26

*Billy Pauch Jr. (Frenchtown, N.J.) at New Egypt, N.J., June 14

182Could there be STSS South winner No. 6 on Sunday at Susquehanna?  The conditions are right.

The most recent Modified event of any kind at the track took place in June 2009, a small-block-only program topped by Temple, Pa., veteran Meme DeSantis.  Three years prior, in 2006, Jimmy Horton of Neshanic Station, N.J., was the victor in a DIRTcar-sanctioned big-block event.

There was a stint from the mid-1990s through early 2000s when Modifieds were a regular staple at Susquehanna, bringing a warm sense of nostalgia to race fans and teams.

Now, on Sunday, the STSS makes its inaugural visit to Susquehanna, a speedway renovated and rejuvenated this season by new owner Scott Gobrecht and general manager Kolten Gouse.

Currently, Friesen leads the standings by 59 points over Watt, 60 over Duane Howard, with Craig Von Dohren 81 points back in fourth and Jordan Watson fifth, 88 points back, as the highest-ranked Delaware driver.

Joining the Modifieds Sunday are Sportsman in a 25-lap contest paying $1,000 to win and $100 to start.

Pit gates open at 2 p.m. Grandstand gates are unlocked at 4 p.m. Hot laps will hit the track at 6:20 p.m. and racing will begin promptly at 7 p.m.
