Bohn Continues Streak; Wins 199 at Bowman Gray

(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) Danny Bohn may have taken some time away to focus on his career, but he still remembers how to get around Bowman Gray Stadium – and how to find his way to Winner’s Circle.
After grabbing the checkered on Friday night at the Stadium, Bohn returned on Saturday to try his hand in the Strutmasters.com 199 for the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour. Bohn had taken the checkered in last year’s
199-lapper at Bowman Gray and was eager to repeat his success.
Ryan Preece of Berlin, CT was the fastest qualifier, with Bohn turning in the second fastest lap. Preece lept out into the lead on the initial start but shortly after ran into some wreckage. He was forced to pit and head back to the
rear.
In his absence, Bohn took over the lead – but it wasn’t long until Bohn was challenged by George Brunnhoelzl III of West Babylon, NY. Bohn and Brunnhoelzl fought hard side-by-side on a few restarts until Brunnhoelzl finally
powered by Bohn on the outside to claim the lead on lap 30.
“George got me on that one restart, and I knew I had a really good car. He got a good run on the outside, and I was just biding my time,” said Bohn. “I knew if I could save my tires and be there at the end, we’d have a good car.”
DSC_0362For restart after restart, Bohn moved to the outside to try and reclaim the top spot from Brunnhoelzl. Over 100 laps later  – on lap 147 – Bohn was able to make the outside groove work for him and take back the lead.
“I got a good run on the outside. After that if I could keep that thing on a rail, there was no stopping us,” said Bohn.
Bohn did, however, have one last threat to his lead: Ryan Preece had been steadily making his way up through the field after pitting early in the race. And on the final few laps, Preece was on Bohn’s bumper and looking for the win.
Preece bolted out during one restart to claim the lead, although officials ruled Preece had jumped too early. Preece relinquished his position back to Bohn and didn’t have another shot until the checkered flag waved. “I tried to do
everything I could on that restart – I knew if we went at the same time, he was probably going to win. So I did everything I could. That’s what I have to do as a racecar driver,” said Preece about the jump.
Bohn claimed the checkered with Preece finishing behind him in second. Jeremy Gerstner of Tampa, FL came in third.
Derek Stoltz of Walkertown put on a clinic in the Farm Bureau Insurance Sportsman Series, flying from the rear of the field up to the front to take home the victory. Zack Clifton of Walkertown finished in second.
In the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series, Spencer Martin of Winston-Salem brought home the win with Fletcher Whaley of Advance finishing second.
