056SUSQUEHANNA, PA.- May 9, 2016- It’s the night we have all been waiting for as Penn Can Speedway drops the green flag on the 2016 racing season with the running of the Can Opener. The Modifieds will run 40 laps, paying $1,500 to win. The 602 Crate Sportsman, Street Stocks, Crate Late Models, Factory Stocks and Four Cylinders will all be in competition beginning at 7:00 p.m.

After raining out two weeks in a row, the 2016 opener is now set to go tonight highlighted by the extra distance event for the Modifieds. Last year Dan Pompey kicked off the season by racing to the victory in the Can Opener. He was chased to the stripe by Mike Dougherty and eventual Track Champion Kevin Hartnett.

118Nick Rochinski had dominated the event until he was sidelined by motor troubles late in the race. They would continue to plague him all season long and yet he was still able to come home in a three way tie for second in the final point standings with Pompey and Alan Rudalavage. Look for all of those drivers to be around the front again tonight in the 2016 lid lifter.

Tonight marks the return of Late Model racing to Penn Can Speedway for the first time in several  years. The track announced during the off season that a new Crate Late Model division would debut in 2016. That time has come and they will be in action tonight for the first time. While we don’t anticipate a big car count to start the season, we anticipate the class to grow throughout the season.

“We are 100% committed to building up the new Crate Late Model division”, said Promoter Dan Harpell. “The first step was aligning ourselves with the CARS program that American Racer Tire offers. It’s an outstanding program that will give our drivers a great opportunity to take home some good money along with the tire giveaway program that is offered”, he added.

Tonight’s show starts at 7:00 p.m. and will be run off efficiently to get our fans and drivers home at a decent hour. Our normal weekly show runs just over three hours on average and we anticipate tonight to be no different.

Pit and grandstand gates open at 5:00 p.m. Hot laps will take place at 6:15 p.m. and the first heat will take the green flag at 7:00 p.m. The complete information sheet can be found here on our Facebook page.
