Mechanicsburg Pa. -June 7, 2016- Williams Grove Speedway will host the return of the USAC Silver Crown Series coming up this Friday night, June 10 at 7:30 pm when the historic oval revives the Ted Horn/Bill Schindler Memorial race, last run in 1974 and won by California’s Bruce Walkup.
The USAC Silver Crown cars will compete in the 100-lap Horn/Schindler Memorial paying $8,000 to win out of a nearly $37,000 total purse, all in honor of the late oval racing greats who were killed in auto racing crashes in 1948 and 1952, respectively. Silver Crown itself last competed at Williams Grove Speedway back in July, 1981, when Eddie Leavitt of Kearney, Missouri, scored the win.
This Friday’s show marks the end of a 35-year Silver Crown drought at Williams Grove. Adult general admission tickets are $25 with youth ages 13 – 20 admitted for $10 and ages 12 and under admitted for free.
The Williams Grove portion of the 50/50 will be given to the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing. After practice laps on Friday night for the Silver Crown cars, the monster USAC machines will conduct time trials to set the feature field. There will be no qualifying heat races. Only a B-Main, if needed, will be run. The ARDC Midgets will compete in a full program along with the Silver Crown cars.
There will be no regular 410-sprint car racing at Williams Grove this Friday.
Kody Swanson of Kingsburg, California, is the current USAC Silver Crown point leader in a quest for his third series title in a row.
Swanson is expected to be in action at Williams Grove Friday along with other national stars such as Chris Windom, Canton, IL.; Jerry Coons Jr., Tucson, AZ.; Dave Darland, Kokomo, IN.; Bryan Clauson, Noblesville, IN.; Brady Bacon, Broken Arrow, OK., and many more.
Of the locals expected to strap into the USAC beasts, drivers include Mark Smith, Steve Buckwalter, Billy Pauch Jr., and others.
A driver autograph session is expected to take place in the Williams Grove Speedway infield on Friday night immediately following the conclusion of qualifying time trials.
A hospitality tent hosted by the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing will offer Ted Horn and Bill Schindler memorabilia in the infield during the event.
The 1953 Horn/Schindler Memorial winning racecar of Reading’s Ernie McCoy will also be on display.
The last appearance of any type of USAC racing at Williams Grove was back in 1996 when the national USAC sprint car series stormed the speedway with local Billy Pauch upending the invaders.
