Woodhull, NY –April 30, 2016- This Saturday, April 30, Woodhull Raceway, Mountain Dew and Pepsi present the first complete show of the 2016 season. The Insinger Performance 370 Modifieds will compete in their first points race of the season with Westfield, PA pilot Billy Van Pelt returning as the two-time and defending track champion.
Van Pelt has garnered seventeen championships in the Modifieds at Woodhull in his storied career, but ‘BVP’ has a laundry list of drivers that could knock him off the top rung this season. The group is made up of young guns and veterans and they will all converge on ‘New York’s Toughest Bullring’ this Saturday night.
Donnie Lawson and Mike Bills were the two closest points competitors in 2015. Lawson has looked solid in the Modified practice sessions that have taken place the last two Saturday nights. Bills and his No. 21 is always a threat on the high banks and looks to repeat his success of last season.
The next group of drivers to keep your eye on all finished within two points of each other in 2015. Cory Costa, Kenny Peoples Jr, and Dillon Groover all look to improve their 2015 points finishes. Although, the situation has changed for Cory Costa in 2016.
Costa will race for Herbie Wright on Friday nights, allowing Costa to use his No. 02 to travel the Short Track Super Series North Region events. The former Crate Sportsman competitor will now bounce around on Saturday nights to get more seat time at track falling on the STSS schedule. We will likely see Costa at Woodhull, but not likely on a weekly basis.
Groover appears to be ready to take the next step as a title contender, but certainly knocking down win number one will be a priority in 2016. He was dangerously close on several occasions last season.
Peoples comes into 2016 with renewed confidence as a driver who has that intangible ‘stuff’ that could see the Addison native go from race winning driver to championship threat. The driver of the 5k is confident and up to the challenge.
One driver that might not be getting a lot of attention, but should, is Boyd McTavish. ‘B-Mac’ is taking over the reigns of the Herrington Motorsports No. 1 in 2016, and will bring his experience racing at Ransomville and Merrittville Speedways to the High Banks on Saturday nights.
Saturday night’s action with the Modifieds will be joined by the NAPA Crate Sportsman, SWL Awards 360 Late Models, Joe Willcox Performance Automatics Street Stocks, Daugherty Auto Sales Mini Stocks and Woodhull Auto Supply Front Wheel Drives.
Fans can find their way into the grandstands Saturday night for $11 with the gates opening up at 4:30pm, with Scott Lyon’s first green flag dropping at 6:30pm.
