Short Track Super Series Fueled By VP Announces Formation Of 2016 Open Sportsman Series; Point Fund & Schedule Announced; $1,000 Thunder Mountain Speedway Incentive
BOYERTOWN, PA – Open Sportsman racers, welcome to the Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By VP.
On Saturday during the Eastern Motorsport Press Association (EMPA) Convention at the Crowne Plaza in King of Prussia, Pa., STSS organizer Brett Deyo officially unveiled plans for a six-race Open Sportsman companion series to the existing Short Track Super Series Modified schedule.
The STSS Open Sportsman mini-series will compete at four facilities starting on Tuesday, May 10 at Big Diamond Speedway in Minersville, Pa. Other tracks on the agenda include Thunder Mountain Speedway in Center Lisle, N.Y. (May 29 and September 4), Accord (N.Y.) Speedway (July 5) and I-88 Speedway in Afton, N.Y. (June 21 and the championship event October 7).
The inaugural STSS Open Sportsman champion will pocket $1,250 cash plus a 54-gallon drum of VP Racing Fuel.
The top-10 drivers in the final series standings will be paid as follows: 1. $1,250; 2. $750; 3. $500; 4. $350; 5. $250; 6. $225; 7. $200; 8. $175; 9. $150; 10. $125.
All series events will offer a minimum of $1,000 to win and $100 to take the green flag. The opener in May at Big Diamond pays $125 to start.
In an added twist, Thunder Mountain Speedway owner Karl Spoonhower has contributed a $1,000 cash bonus if a Saturday night regular at the track is able to win the STSS Open Sportsman touring championship.
“Our sport is constantly evolving and right now was the perfect time to step up for the Open Sportsman competitors,” Deyo said. “The division remains strong in the Southern Tier and beyond. The STSS Open Sportsman series offers these teams the opportunity to travel with a reasonable schedule.”
American Racer will be the tire brand of choice for the STSS Open Sportsman division. General Open Sportsman rules, in line with participating venues, will be enforced. VP Racing Fuel is the preferred gasoline of choice for the STSS. Specific race information will be released prior to each event.
The first five events of the series will operate on a 100-point distribution. The year-end Short Track SuperNationals 9 at I-88 Speedway in October will offer the “championship points” 150-point distribution.
