Seuss Has His Eyes Firmly On South Boston

SOUTH BOSTON, VA- April 5, 2016- When the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour schedule comes out each year, Andy Seuss circles the two South Boston Speedway races on his calendar.
The defending two-time tour champion leads all current drivers with three South Boston victories, and is looking for back-to-back wins headed into the April 9 150-lap NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour race. He won last fall’s stop at South Boston for his 21st career win.
“I love everything about it. If the truth has to be told, I love the entire facility. I love the way you have to approach the race, the energy of the fans, everything,” said the 29-year-old Seuss. “It’s just exciting to go there.”
Seuss has won a third of his South Boston starts with three wins in nine races. Those wins came in 2009, 2014 and last year, and were with two different car owners. The first was with Riggs Racing, from nearby Martinsville, while the last two have come with current car owner Eddie Harvey.
“I’ve won there with different teams, different cars. I don’t know what it is about the track. I guess it’s my driving style. I like bull rings. South Boston is open enough to have a couple of grooves, but it’s still tight enough for pure racing,” said Seuss.
Seuss points out, though, that just because he loves the place and has been successful there doesn’t mean he’s immune to problem. Just flash back a year when he got caught up in a wild wreck on the front straight and wound up 16th.
“The narrow straights can cause problems. If you do find yourself in traffic and a wreck starts to happen, there’s not a lot of room to avoid things. That caught us last spring,” said Seuss. “But you can really move around on the track and that helps me. I’m always searching, searching for a better line.”
Seuss says the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour is grass roots racing at its best and that wins in the past mean very little going into next Saturday night.
“This tour is extremely competitive. About eight people can win every week and there are a few others that it wouldn’t be shocking if they won,” said Seuss. “It’s getting tougher and tougher every year. It’s all very, very competitive. You can’t be lacking in any area.”
Seuss and the modifieds will be under the lights at South Boston Speedway on Saturday, April 9 with the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour 150 racing program. A 150-lap NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour race will headline the night’s action with the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Car Division being featured in twin 75-lap races. The four-race program will be capped by a 15-lap race for the Budweiser Hornets Division.
