Scott Dellinger, Gene Knaub and Jeff Haag Win Williams Grove Speedway Saturday Night Features
Mechanicsburg, PA May 31, 2015 Rain, often the enemy of dirt-track racing, became a positive factor Saturday night at Williams Grove Speedway. A shower prior to qualifying, while delaying the racing program’s start, turned the racing surface into a multiple-groove racing wonderland.
Davey Walsh led the way at the start of the 20-lap Blazer’s Body Shop Super Sportsman main. Kenny Edkins, Steve Fannasy, Rich Eichelberger, and Jay Fannasy gave chase. The event’s first caution arose during the third circuit when Scott Geesey came to a halt in turn two.
Walsh continued to lead with Edkins in close pursuit. Steve Fannasy, Eichelberger, Jay Fannasy, and ninth-place starter Scott Dellinger had a close fight for third. At the race’s midway point, Dellinger shot into fourth using a three-wide pass at the exit of turn two.
The second and final caution occurred on lap 12. Davey Walsh, Kenny Edkins, Scott Dellinger, and Steve Fannasy, following the restart, were in tight formation. With five-laps remaining Dellinger swept into second position. One lap later Dellinger used the low lane in turn four to become the new race leader.
Scott Dellinger, from Lewisberry, gained a comfortable lead. A battle raged for second between Walsh, Steve Fanansy and Kenny Edkins. Fannasy made a late push to capture second position. At the finish Scott Dellinger won his fourth career Saturday Night Series feature by 15 lengths over Steve Fannasy, Kenny Edkins, Davey Walsh, and Scott Geesey.
Following the feature there was a protest on Scott Dellinger’s engine. There was a check of the head on his engine and Dellinger’s car passed the inspection.
Preliminaries for the 24 entries went to Geesey, Steve Wilbur and Doug Dodson. Frankie Herr received the Sprint Aces Hard Charger award.
Sam Rial was on the pole for the launching of the 20-lap Credit Connection Auto Sales 358 Late Model feature. Ron Kline, Alan Sagi and Brad Shank occupied the next three positions. Eleventh-place starter Gene Knaub was fifth by the completion of the opening circuit. Two laps later Knaub, using an outside line, advanced into second.
A caution during the fourth lap erased Sam Rial’s five-length advantage. With the race underway, Knaub moved to the low side of the speedway. He pulled even with Rial on the back stretch. Gene Knaub remained on the low side in turns three and four, passing Rial exiting turn four.
Gene Knaub drove away from the field. Alan Sagi and Ron Kline fought for second with Sagi gaining the runner-up position. Knaub, from Dover, won his 45th career Saturday Night Series feature by a straightaway over Alan Sagi. Ron Kline was third, with Cam Zeigler in fourth and Les Hare crossed the line in fifth. Hare’s car did not make weight at the scale and he was dropped to the rear of the finishing cars. Scott Richwine finished in fifth.
Qualifying for the 21 cars went to Sagi, Hare and Wes Alleman. Travis Mease was the winner of the Artwerks Hard Charger award.
Chris Heller advanced from his sixth-starting positon into the lead on the opening circuit of the 15-lap Aquafun Pools Street Stock feature. Jasen Geesaman, driving Steven Dove’s car, was second with Kevin Sigler in third. Jeff Haag proceeded from 11th into fourth. A caution in the second lap for a spinning Geesaman slowed the field.
Jeff Haag used the restart to charge into second. One lap later Haag captured first with a back stretch pass of Chris Heller.
Jeff Haag settled into a comfortable lead. Kevin Sigler, Dalton Frye, Craig Morgan, and Chris Heller were in a close contest for second. Jasen Geesaman rallied from the rear of the field to join the battle for second. In the final laps Geesaman’s car developed mechanical issues and dropped off the pace.
A final-lap caution gave Kevin Sigler one attempt to wrestle the lead from Haag. Haag, from Auburn, dominated the last circuit, crossing the finish line 10 lengths ahead of Sigler. The victory is Haag’s 10th career with the Saturday Night Series placing him in a tie for fourth on the all-time leading Street Stock feature winners’ list. Craig Morgan finished in third, with Dalton Frye in fourth and Chris Heller was fifth.
Heller and Geesaman won the heats for the 20 entries. Dalton Frye collected the Artwerks Hard Charger award.
