BREWERTON, NY – Jimmy Phelps from Baldwinsville, NY came into Friday night racing as the points leader in the Tracey Road Equipment DIRTcar Big Block Modifieds and by the end of the night extended his points lead. Phelps used a last-lap pass exiting turn-four getting by race long leader Chris Hile for his 20th Modified win at the speedway.

Other winners on Syracuse Haulers night were, Nick Krause and Stephen Denton (SUNY Canton DIRTcar Sportsman) Justin Williams (STARS Mod Lites) Quinn Wallis (JB Logging & Firewood 4-Cylinders).

Katelyn Hile and Chris Hile would lead the Big Block Modified field down to the green with Chris Hile grabbing the early advantage in the 35-lap feature.

With 10 laps complete Hile bolted out to a full straightaway lead while behind him Larry Wight and Tyler Trump raced side-by-side for second and third with Jim Witko and Chad Phelps showing in fourth and fifth.

At lap 15 Hile was still in total command at the front of the field still using the top groove on the speedway. Trump and Wight were locked in a tight battle with Witko and Tom Sears having their own close race for fourth and fifth.

With 20 laps showing on the scoring tower and no yellows to slow the field, Hile was still quick running alone in the lead as Trump and Wight looked for a way to close in. Witko, Chad Phelps, Tom Sears, Tim Sears and Jimmy Phelps were in a tight pack for fourth through eighth.

With 10 laps to go Hile, Wight and Trump were still the top-three. Witko, Tim Sears, Jimmy Phelps and Chad Phelps were slugging it out as the final laps started clicking off the scoring tower.

Late race cautions would spell the difference in the race that tightened the field up for a dash to the finish. One of the cautions was for Tyler Trump on lap 31 when something seemed to happen to his car as he spun in three and four. On lap 32 Tim Sears Jr. and Jimmy Phelps made racing contact sending Sears around in one and two.

On the final lap Jimmy Phelps would move into second and set his sights on the leader Hile. Going into turns three and four, Phelps found the bite he needed down low getting by Hile exiting turn four, winning the race to the checkers. Chris Hile, Larry Wight, Max McLaughlin and Chad Phelps would finish second through fifth.

Forty SUNY Canton DIRTcar Sportsman signed into the pits setting up two 25-lap features.

In the first feature Mike Stanton Jr. would bolt out to the lead opening distance between himself and the rest of the field.

By lap 10 Stanton opened a full straightaway lead as Tye-Scott Rood and Amy Holland ran bumper to bumper for second and third with Nick Krause rapidly gaining on Rood and Holland.

With 10 laps to go Stanton held a 4-second lead as Krause broke away from the rest of the top-five that had Rood, Holland and Scott Prentice battling for third through fifth.

By lap 19 Krause ran down Stanton setting up a battle for the lead. It would take Krause just 2 laps to get by Stanton to be scored the new leader.

Over the final laps nobody challenged Krause as he cruised to the win. Scott Prentice made a late charge to finish second with Mike Stanton Jr., Amy Holland and Tye-Scott Rood finishing third through fifth.

In the second 25-lap feature Jeff Taylor would lead the opening lap until Colby Herzog went to the top spot on the restart after a lap 2 caution and restart.

On lap 4 Taylor and Herzog would make contact slowing their momentum down to let Stephen Denton get by the both of them to take the lead.

At the 10-lap point, Denton, Herzog, Joe Shields, Brent Joy and Jeff Taylor were in a close race for the top-five spots.

With 10 laps to go it was still anyone’s race with Denton being chased by Shields, Herzog and Joy.

A caution on lap 21 would set up a 4-lap dash to the checkers between Denton and Shields. Shields would throw everything he had at Denton, pulling even more than once. Denton never flinched as he held the low groove, hit his marks and beat Shields to the checkers. Rich Townsend, Brent Joy and Bill Clark, Jr. finished third through fifth.

In the 20 lap STARS Mod Lite feature it was a tight battle at the front of the field with Mike Mullen and Tucker Halliday both leading laps with no lead safe in the first half of the race.

The story of the race was points leader and multi-time feature winner Justin Williams.

Just before halfway Williams had a right rear tire go flat and made a dash to his pit area under yellow. Williams jumped out of his car, grabbed the jack and started jacking the car up on his own to take the tire off when one of his crew members and one from another race team helped get the tire changed and Williams back on the speedway as the green flag was waving on the restart. Williams would make his way back through the field and grab the win. Mike Mullen, Joe Garafolo, Tom Perkins and Hunter Lawton finished second through fifth.

In the 15-lap JB Logging & Firewood 4-Cylinder feature Chuck Powelczyk would start 7th and in a power move would have the lead by the end of the first lap. The yellow would wave on lap 4 to tighten the field up. When the race went back green, Quinn Wallis would grab the lead getting by Powelczak.

Wallis, who has knocked on victory lane’s door many times in the past at the speedway, kicked the door wide-open and was never seriously challenged the rest of the way in winning his first ever Brewerton Speedway feature. Chuck Powelczyk, Evan Wright, Donnie Rider and Ray Bechler finished second through fifth.
