By Dana Royer/34 Raceway
BURLINGTON, IA – (5-23-15) – A beautiful night for racing brought out the cars (97) and the race fans to 34 Raceway Saturday night May 23 with four of the six classes taking to the track seeing drivers getting their first wins of the year. Dean McGee, Galesburg, Il. (IMCA Modifieds), Austen Becerra, Carthage, Il (Sport Mods), Brandon Lambert, Carthage, Il (4 Cylinders), and Aaron Shuck, Joliet, Il. (IMRA Midgets) all raced to their first wins of 2015 at 34. Jayson Ditsworth, Gladstone, Il, made it two wins in a row in the 305 Sprints as did John Oliver, Jr. Danville in the IMCA Stock Cars.
Rain forced the cancellation of the Sprint Invaders race on Sunday, May 24. So coming up this week, May 30 will be a different kind of racing at 34 Raceway with the Shipley Ready Mix Quads, Bikes & Side X Sides tackling a special built course. Admission to the grandstands is just $5.00. Classes include Quad pro, Quad open B, Quad 200cc-2 stroke, Quad 350cc-4 stroke, Quad 90cc, Quad 50cc, Bike pro, Bike open B, Bike 85-105cc, Bike 65cc, Bike 50cc, Trail blazers 70-125cc-4 stroke, Pit bikes, Side x Sides. The first feature of the night saw eighteen 4 cylinders come to track with Brandon Lambert and Colton Keck on the front row. Lambert took the early lead. The second of two yellow flags came out on lap eleven of the twelve lap feature and Kimberly Abbott took advantage to close the gap on the restart between her and the leader. But Abbott wouldn’t be able to catch Lambert who took the win, his first at 34 Raceway, by three car lengths. Stevie Shull, Cody Washburn and Jerrod Nichols would round out the top five.
Up next were the 305 Sprints with Heath Bundy and Brandyn Martin on the front row of the fourteen car field. Martin would take the early lead only to give it up on lap three when Jayson Ditsworth took advantage on the restart following two consecutive cautions. With Ditsworth was running strong pulling away from the field, a fierce battle for the second spot drew all eyes to that action with Martin, Nick Guernsey and Justin Newberry exchanging positions for several laps. Ditsworth would run into lap traffic by lap nine which would cut his lead. The third of three yellow flags came out on lap twelve but Ditsworth again pull away from the field and the battle for second continued. The leader again would run into lap traffic with two laps remaining. Nick Guernsey took control of the second spot and was closing the gap but Ditsworth was too strong and maneuvered through the traffic to take the win for the second time this year. John Schulz moved up to take third followed by Newberry and Shane Quam to round out the top five
Austen Becerra, Carthage, Il., picked up his first ever IMCA Sport Mod feature win topping the fifteen car field. Becerra took the lead from Dustin Fenton on lap six of the twenty lap feature and pulled away from the field. Again the battle for second kept the fan’s attention with Brett Timmerman (moving up from his 14th place start), Joey Gower and Sean Wyett battling it out. As Becerra took the checkered for the win, Timmerman, Gower, Wyett and Kyle Hill would follow to round out the top five.
IMRA Midgets were back at 34 Raceway with Austen Schuck picking up the win. Schuck took the lead from Johnny Murdock on lap five of the fifteen lap feature, his first this season at 34 Raceway. Schuck pulled away from the field as Brayden Gaylord and AJ Johnson battled for the second spot. Gaylord, Johnson, Robert Bell and John Springer rounded out the top five.
A nice field of sixteen modifieds took to the track with Dean McGee, Galesburg, Il. getting the win. McGee took the lead from his front row start and would not relinquish his number one spot despite serious challenges from Brandon Rothzen. Two cautions were thrown throughout the twenty lap feature but McGee was able to survive the restarts and get his first win this year at the 3/8 mile ahead of Rothzen. Dustin Smith, Jeff Waterman and Blake Woodruff (moving up from his 13th start position) would follow to round out the top five.
The final feature of the night would see John Oliver, Jr., Danville, pick up his second straight win in the IMCA Stock Car feature. Oliver took the lead on a track to his liking on lap three of the twenty lap race. Three yellow flags were thrown in the last seven laps giving Shane Watts three shots at the leader on the restarts. But Oliver was able to hold on taking the win by three car lengths over Watts. Chase Klenk, Devon Timmerman and Ray Raker would follow to round out the top five.
