CONCORD, N.C. –October 14, 2016 – Dirt late models and modifieds returned to The Dirt Track at Charlotte on Wednesday for a high-speed preview of the Oct. 27-29 Bad Boy Off Road World of Outlaws World Finals.
World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series competitors – as well as World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series champion Donny Schatz in another late model appearance – rocketed around the four-tenths mile oval in hopes of developing the quickest car for when World Finals action commences in just two weeks.
“This is the racing capital of the world. This is a crown-jewel race,” reigning Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series champion Jonathan Davenport said. “Everyone wants to come here and do well. We came out here to try and get a good base setup and to kind of know what to expect out of the car when we’re back on the track.”
Drivers know one thing to expect once they roll into The Dirt Track at Charlotte: heightened competition under a moonlit atmosphere unlike anything else on the schedule.
“There’s always a huge crowd for this race, so you want to do well in front of all the fans,” said Rick Eckert, the third-place man in World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series points behind Josh Richards and runner-up Shane Clanton.
“It’s a tough race. You’ve got to qualify well, so you’ve got to have the whole package in your car. Testing helps us because it gives us a chance to take new notes on the chassis and get a good feel for the track surface before we race on it.”
