The Open Modifieds made their first appearance on the Spirit Auto Center quarter mile this season and veteran wheelman, Louie Cicconi raced to a last lap win over Matt Stangle in the twenty-five lap feature event. John Wagner, Jr. earned his first ever 270cc Micro Sprint win at the Bridgeport Speedway while 2015 600cc Micro Champion, Lee Nardelli returned to action for the first time this season and took home the victory in the 600 main event. Chris Sammons returned to Victory Lane in the ServPro Four Cylinder Enduros.
Rich Keller took the early race lead and then drove away from the competition in the 270cc Micro Sprint feature. Keller took the crossed flags at the end of ten laps but then ran into mechanical trouble, turning the lead over to John Wagner, Jr. who had been running in second. Wagner led the way through the second half of the race as Tyler Reinhardt captured second from Ryan Wozunk in the final laps. Brandon Pavel finished fourth with Colin Bustard finishing fifth.
2015 600 Champion, Lee Nardelli accepted the ride in the Mike Fillbrunn No. 66 for Friday night’s action and then proceeded to pick up right where he left off last season by winning the twenty lap feature event. Alex Bright led the first five laps before Nardelli took the lead on a lap six restart. Bright had his hands full with Bill Thomas for several laps but it was Bright’s teammate, Lou Cicconi who rallied in the final laps to finish third behind Nardelli and Bright. Cicconi pitted with three laps scored, restarting at the rear of the field and making his way to the front in his first race in the No. 75 600 Micro Sprint. Thomas finished fourth with Jon Keller rounding out the top five.
Chris Sammons earned his third win of the season in the Four Cylinder Enduro feature after closing in on race leader, John Webster with just four laps to go. Sammons took the lead on lap seventeen and led Webster to the checkered flag.
The Open Mods are always a popular addition to Friday night action but after two rain outs, the Modified competitors finally had their chance on the Spirit Auto Center quarter mile. Richie Pratt, Jr. led the first three laps before Matt Stangle, making his first start on the quarter mile, took the lead on lap four.
Stangle’s performance was impressive as he pulled away from the competition. Cicconi moved into second on lap six but then lost the battle for the position on lap fourteen to Steve Davis. Cicconi regained the spot on lap sixteen and then turned his attention to catching the race leader. Stangle took the white flag with Cicconi on his bumper. Cicconi took the lead between turns one and two as Stangle struggled with a broken brake caliper on the final lap. It was Cicconi’s third win in an Open Mod event on the Spirit Auto Center quarter mile to lead all competitors in feature wins. Stangle held on to finish second over Davis, Pratt and 2014 DA’s Auto Body Rookie Champion, Matt Peck who was also making his first start on the quarter mile track.
