Experience and Luck Benefit Myers at Bowman Gray

(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) Burt Myers took a little luck and turned it into a victory in Saturday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts 100 at Bowman Gray Stadium. Of course, the decades of experience his family has racing at the Madhouse allowed him to capitalize on it
all.
With Saturday’s lineup for the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series being determined by random draw, Burt Myers of Walnut Cove could’ve started anywhere in the field from first to 20th. But in a stroke of good luck, he drew the pole as his start. Brandon Ward of
Winston-Salem drew second to start on Myers’s outside.
Myers held on to lead the entire way, fending off Ward for a total of seven double-file restarts after cautions. “Brandon kept me on my toes. He ran me hard all night,” said Myers. “Where he would worry me was when I could get away, and I was sitting there running
my pace. He was still there. I knew how good my car was and he was still there – which means his car was pretty good too.”
“Typically in my career I’ve been the type where I try to save as much as I can. You never know if you’re going to get in a last lap restart or something where you don’t want to use up too much. But he was right there,” said Myers. “He’s got a great car and a great
team. You’re never comfortable until you can come under that checkered flag first and you can breathe a sigh of relief.”
Myers credited the victory to hard work, a good car, and the experience that comes with decades of turning laps at Bowman Gray Stadium. After all, with storms ravaging the area but leaving the Stadium untouched, track conditions were hard to guess at. “We came
over this morning and practiced a little bit. We made some tweaks. We came back this afternoon and put some of them back,” said Myers. “A lot of it is years of experience: knowing what to expect, knowing how the track is in the afternoon and how’s that going to affect it
during the race that night.”
“We hit the adjustment just right before the race. And if you had stopped time and said we could work on the car, I would’ve left it alone. It was that good,” said Myers.
Brandon Ward finished second, with Danny Bohn of Huntersville finishing third.
In the Texas Steak & Tap House Sportsman Series, John Holleman of Winston-Salem bumped Zack Clifton of Walkertown out of the way to take the checkered in the first 20-lapper. But the Madhouse Scramble sent some good luck Clifton’s way, placing him on the
pole for the start of the second race.
Clifton went on to cross the finish line first, while John Holleman climbed up from eighth to finish on his bumper. However, Clifton was disqualified after post-race technical inspection, awarding the victory to Holleman. He pulls off the rare accomplishment of winning both
races in Saturday’s double-header.
Brian Wall of Winston-Salem banged fenders with Donnie Martin of Winston-Salem as they battled for the lead in the 20-lapper for the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series. Wall emerged victorious and took the checkered.
In the Law Offices of John Barrow Stadium Stock Series, Wesley Thompson of Advance and Zack Staley of Lexington each brought home a victory trophy.
