GEORGETOWN, DE – Eight drivers representing four states will clash for a $7,500 championship next Tuesday (Sept. 1) at Georgetown Speedway.

The inaugural season of the Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Hi-Tek South Region culminates at the historic Georgetown half-mile oval with the second running of the ‘Blast at the Beach’ presented collectively by driver and racing businessman Eric Kormann and Brett Deyo of BD Motorsports Media LLC. Only one Modified race has been held at Georgetown all year, setting up ‘neutral ground’ to decide the crown.

The evening will be headlined by the richest dirt Modified race of 2015 in the state of Delaware, a 35-lap main offering $5,000 minimum to win, $1,000 for 10th and $500 just to take the green flag plus more than $1,000 in lap money, in addition to heat-race cash, small-block bonuses and contingency awards.

Sponsorship support for the ‘Blast at the Beach’ has been received from Hurlock Auto & Speed Supply of Hurlock, Md., Taylor & Messick of Harrington, Del., Shore Water Refining of Dagsboro, Del., and American Portable Mini-Storage of Millsboro, Del.

The five-race STSS South Region sponsored by Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc. and Scotty’s Speed & Diesel was launched this spring with events at five different venues in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware. The series kicked off at Bridgeport (N.J.) Speedway in April, followed by Big Diamond (Pa.) Speedway in May, New Egypt (N.J.) Speedway in June, Delaware International Speedway in August and now, Georgetown Speedway on First State soil Sept. 1.

Championship points will be awarded for the Georgetown program, with 150 points available for a victory and 60 for last. This means a 90-point swing is possible during the night (or more, cars failing to qualify receive 35 points). First through eighth in the standings are separated by just 58 points, each having a legitimate chance at the crown.

Of those eight drivers, four states are represented: New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Delaware.

Below, a look at the contenders:

David Van Horn/Harmony, N.J. – 325 points – Buoyed by a ‘Diamond State 50’ score at Delaware International on Aug. 5, David Van Horn Jr. heads the STSS South Region into Georgetown. Van Horn has accrued 325 points finishing no worse than 12th through the series’ first four races. DVH placed second in the Bridgeport opener, 12th at Big Diamond, seventh at his home track of New Egypt in a back-up car and won his first-ever STSS event at Delaware. Van Horn has a 23-point lead entering Georgetown.

Ryan Watt/Boyertown, Pa. – 302 points – Consistency has played into Ryan Watt’s favor this year on the STSS South Region. The Boyertown, Pa., driver earned a pair of fourth-place results at Bridgeport and New Egypt, a hard-fought seventh at Big Diamond and nursed a bent race car to 11th at Delaware International. He trails Van Horn by 23 markers.

Rick Laubach/Hellertown, Pa. – 292 points – Laubach launched out of the gate in ’15 with back-to-back victories at Bridgeport and Big Diamond. However, a pair of DNFs for the ‘Quaker Shaker’ at both New Egypt and Delaware International leave him 33 points behind the leader with one event remaining.

Anthony Perrego/Montgomery, N.Y. – 291 points – Driving the Gary Mann-owned New York Truck Parts No. 55, Anthony Perrego placed inside the top-10 in three of the first four races, earning 10th at Bridgeport, fourth at Big Diamond and third at New Egypt. However, involvement in an incident not of his own making relegated Perrego to a 14th-place finish at Delaware. He trails leader Van Horn by 34 points.

Craig Von Dohren/Oley, Pa. – 278 points – A podium third-place finish at Delaware International puts Craig Von Dohren back into the championship race. Von Dohren has a pair of top-three finishes to his credit (thirds at Bridgeport and Delaware International). Only a DNF at Big Diamond set back his efforts. He sits 47 points out of the lead.

Billy Pauch Jr./Frenchtown, N.J. – 273 points – Driving the John Pakenham-owned No. 18,  Billy Pauch Jr. finished seventh, sixth and fifth, respectively in the first three events of the STSS South Region. Engine issues at Delaware International sidelined Pauch Jr. during the main, leaving him 52 points out of the top spot.

Jamie Mills/Milford, Del. – 268 points – Jamie Mills has utilized three top-10 finishes to maintain his status as a championship contender. Mills finished eighth at Bridgeport, fifth at Big Diamond and sixth at Delaware International. He sits 57 points out of the lead entering Georgetown, a track where he was a number of victories.

Ryan Godown/Ringoes, N.J. – 267 points – At 58 points behind in eighth position, Ryan Godown is the final driver with a mathematical shot at the championship. Godown finished a season-best second at his home track of New Egypt in June and also recorded a top-10 at Bridgeport, earning a sixth-place result.

A total point fund of more than $19,800 has been posted for the STSS South Region with the top-10 drivers in the standings earning the allotted cash. Those competitors with perfect attendance outside the top-10 will each receive $250 cash.

Drivers not involved in the STSS South Region point battle have plenty of opportunity to take home cash from Georgetown, as well.
