FULTON, NY – June 11, 2016 – It has been a few seasons since Vernon, NY Modified pilot Willy Decker has been a regular at the Fulton Speedway. In fact it had been since 2012 when Decker picked up a win at the Route 57 speedway. It only took Jim Gleason Racing and Willy Decker three races to park the JD Express/LaSalle Electric/Central City Auto Parts/Strada Mia Restaurant/SDJ Construction/No.57J in victory lane.
In the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment DIRTcar Modified feature Decker would take the race lead on lap 2 from Katelyn Hile and then would have to hold off early challenges from Chuck Bower, then constant pressure from Pat Ward mid-race. On lap 23 Larry Wight would move into third place and close in on Decker and Ward making it a three-way battle for the lead.
Over the final laps Wight and Ward would throw everything they had at Decker and Decker never moved off the line he ran the entire race. Coming out of turn four down to the checkers you could have thrown a blanket over Willy Decker, Larry Wight and Pat Ward with Jimmy Phelps right there with them at the finish. AMB scoring showed the top four separated by .830 of a second. Chris Hile would back up his Friday Brewerton win with a fifth place finish. Ryan Phelps, Tom Sears Jr., Chad Phelps, Chuck Bower and Tim Sears Jr. would complete the top ten.
In the 25 lap SUNY Canton Sportsman feature Joe Sobotka would lead the opening two laps until lap 3 Wade Chrisman would use a power move off the top off the speedway to be scored the new leader on the fourth trip around the speedway.
The whole complexion of the race would change on a caution on lap 8 and a restart. When the green came back out leader Chrisman suddenly slowed with driveshaft problems, driving into the infield. Behind Chisman a mad scramble ensued with Ron Davis III driving from his 5th place restart spot and into the lead.
Once out front Davis was the class of the field as he became the first two-time winner this season. Chris Cunningham came home a strong second, last week’s feature winner Tyler Trump, Mike Button and Jim Spano finished third through fifth.
Tony Finch II would lead the opening three laps of the 20 lap Billy Whittaker Cars & Trux RUSH Late Model feature before Alan Fink drove into the lead. A quick yellow would wave on lap 7 to bunch up the field. The move of the race came on the restart when defending track champion Chris Fleming would show power coming from seventh and driving into the lead.
Once out front there was no denying Fleming as he became the first repeat winner in the Late Models. Bret Belden, Johnny Hill, Kevan Cook and Jason Parkhurst finished second through fifth.
There were two first time winners in a pair of 15 lap E&V Energy Novice Sportsman features.
In the first feature Rachel Zacharias, in her first year in a sportsman, led every lap. The win was anything but easy. She first had to hold off repeated challenges from Kelly Smith and late pressure from Jackson Gill for the popular win. John Strickler, Kelly Smith and Terry Falter finished third through fifth.
In the second feature Torrey Stoughtenger wiped out all the early season frustrations he was having by leading every lap. His win was not easy as he had to hold off, from the drop of the green to the checkers, pressure from Patrick LaPage. The difference at the finish was 00.458 of a second. Willy Decker Jr., Kyle Perry and Taylor Jackson finished third through fifth.
The biggest rivalry in the JB Logging & Firewood Four Cylinders at both Brewerton and Fulton Speedways continued Saturday between Ray and Dakota Bechler and Chuck Powelczyk. The 15 lap feature didn’t disappoint as they put on a show when the three battled bumper to bumper and door handle right down to the checkers. Colby Herzog led the opening lap before Powelczyk took over the top spot. After battling lap after lap Ray Bechler was able to take the lead on lap 12 and go onto the win. Dakota Bechler, Chuck Powelczyk,Tim Dunn and Skip DeGroff rounded out the top five.
Jeremy Isabell would take the lead on lap 6 of the 15 lap Firehouse Subs Mod Lite feature. Once out front Isabell would hold back challenges from Doug Williams for the victory. Joe Isabell, Jim Bogett, and Justin Williams finished third through fifth.
