WEST BURLINGTON, IA (4-11-2015) – The National Sprint League (NSL) held its inaugural race at 34 Raceway Saturday night, April 11 with a large crowd and 40 of some the best in 410 sprint car racing on hand. Saturday was also the first night of action for the IMCA Sport Mods and the IMRA Midgets and the 4 cylinders were also in action. Picking up wins were Wayne Johnson, Knoxville, Ia (NSL Sprints),  Joey Gower, Quincy, Il. (IMCA Sport Mods), Patrick Bruns, Champaign, Il. (IMRA Midgets) and Michael Grossman, Keokuk, IA (4 cylinders).johnson

Coming up this week will be another huge event for 34 Raceway with the 7th annual Slocum 50 Memorial race feature the Cornbelt/ALMS/MARS Super Late Models Series. $10,555 goes to the winner of the late model feature race.  In 2014 seventeen year old Bobby Pierce picked up the win in the 50 lap race that featured some heavy hitters like Jason Feger, Brandon Sheppard, Brian Birkhofer, and many more putting on a show in one of the track’s biggest crowds. Also running will be 305 Sprints and IMCA Stock Cars. For more information go to www.34raceway.com.

Wayne Johnson took advantage of a spin by leader Terry McCarl to claim the inaugural feature event for the FVP National Sprint League Saturday night at the 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa. The Knoxville, Iowa driver took command on lap 18 and held off McCarl on a late restart.

Johnson got the jump on pole-sitter Bryan Clauson to start the event, but McCarl, who started in row two, circled the lead pair to lead lap two. The Altoona, Iowa driver pulled away from Johnson, while Clauson, Brian Brown and Steve Kinser battled in the top five.

After completing lap 17, McCarl performed a 360 spin in turn two, while Johnson was holding off Clauson for the second spot. McCarl maintained third. A lap later, Davey Heskin spun, bringing out the final caution of the race.

Johnson led Clauson, McCarl, a surging Brad Loyet and Brown back to the green flag. Johnson was able to maintain his advantage, bucking a large cushion and gaining the win. McCarl worked by Clauson on lap 21 and finished second. Loyet used the low side to grab third late. Clauson and KSE Hard-charger, Tim Kaeding, rounded out the top five. Quick-timer, Danny Lasoski, Brown, Kinser, Sammy Swindell and Mark Dobmeier completed the top ten.

Brooke Tatnell, Swindell, Terry McCarl and Dusty Zomer took heat races, while Kaeding won the B main. Brandon Stevenson flipped hard in time trials. He was uninjured.

“I’m getting to old for this!” said Johnson in Victory Lane. “It’s getting hard to ride a big old curb like that! Burlington has always been one of my favorite tracks, and to get a win with the NSL here is really great!”

“I’m pretty embarrassed,” said McCarl about his spin while leading. “I just threw away a win. This is such a fun racetrack. The more aggressive I got, the more I enjoyed it. I’d like to thank all our sponsors and everyone here who came to watch us.”

“We were really good,” said Loyet. “We had a really good car tonight. I got to screwing around with my line a little bit there at the end and it cost us a little. My hats off to my guys. We don’t run a 410 very often, but we’re going to this year.”
