 Region’s Richest Event Set For Wednesday, July 27 With $8,888-To-Win ‘Crazy 8s Special’ For Short Track Super Series At Afton Fairgrounds Oval

005AFTON, NY –July 11, 2016- The richest dirt-track Modified event of 2016 in the Southern Tier is set for Wednesday, July 27 at I-88 Speedway.

The Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By VP big-block/small-block Modifieds descend on the Afton Fairgrounds oval for the fourth edition of the ‘Crazy 8s Special’ offering a mammoth $8,888 to the victor with a $20 “Gambler’s Fee” ($6,888 without) posted pre-race.

The 48-lap event is among the most-anticipated events each year in the region. The 10th-place finisher receives $888 and last-place offers $388.

Joining the STSS Modifieds at I-88 are the GRIT Series Crate 602 Sportsman paying $1,000 to win and $100 to start and the XCel 600 Modifieds racing for a $1,000 top prize. A rain date of Thursday, July 28 has been posted.

224The ‘Crazy 8s Special’ serves as Round No. 6 of the STSS Halmar International North Region.

Following the most recent STSS stop at Accord (N.Y.) Speedway on July 5, Ransomville, N.Y., driver Erick Rudolph holds a 26-point lead over defending series champion Stewart Friesen of Sprakers, N.Y. Friesen earned his first STSS North Region score of the season in the Accord 54-lap event.

Rudolph has accrued 413 points to Friesen’s 387. Danny Johnson of Rochester, N.Y., is currently third (340 points), with 2014 champion Andy Bachetti of Sheffield, Mass., fourth (339 points) and Danny Creeden of Wurtsboro, N.Y., fifth (336 points).

228In six STSS North Region events this season, there have been six different winners: Tommy Meier (N.Y.’s Orange County); Ryan Watt (Pa.’s Big Diamond); Chad Cook (N.Y.’s Thunder Mountain); Matt Sheppard (N.Y.’s Outlaw) and Friesen (Accord).

The first ‘Crazy 8s’ event at I-88 was contested in July 2013 with track regular Mike Mahaney of King Ferry, N.Y., scoring the victory. In 2014, Wurtsboro, N.Y., short-track star Danny Creeden was the victor. A year ago, Friesen blitzed through the field, completing a late pass of Andy Bachetti for the triumph.
