Strong turnout of supporters speak out on the significance of motorsports
to the New York State Fairgrounds and all of Central New York
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – May 7, 2015 – A large group of supporters who want to see motorsports continue at the New York State Fairgrounds beyond this year’s NAPA Super DIRT Week greeted state officials Wednesday night to share their opinions in the first public hearings about potential improvements at the fairgrounds.

Led by Brian Pokorny and clad in “Save the Moody Mile” shirts, nearly half the room at the fairgrounds was taken over by fans and backers of NAPA Super DIRT Week with an interest in enhancing the future of the decades-old October racing tradition in Central New York.

Before the public hearing, DIRTcar Racing officials were encouraged by private meetings with the engineering and consulting firms retained by New York to help determine the best way to appropriate $50 million budgeted by the state for improvements at the fairgrounds.

DIRTcar CEO Brian Carter showcased for fans and officials at the hearing the major economic impact NAPA Super DIRT Week has on Central New York businesses in addition to the nearly 50 years of tradition that has come along with it.

DSC_0139“Between our meetings in the afternoon with the consultants retained by the state, and then the public hearing last night, we are very optimistic that there’s room for horses and horsepower at the New York State Fairgrounds,” Carter said. “We want to thank Brian Pokorny for all of his efforts to organize fans, and everybody who attended the hearing last night for letting state and fair officials understand the significance of NAPA Super DIRT Week at the fairgrounds. Super DIRT Week will continue, and we hope it continues in Syracuse.”

Those who were not able to attend the hearing last night can still have their voice heard by sending an email to comment@agriculture.ny.gov. For more information on NAPA Super DIRT Week, go to www.SuperDIRTWeekOnline.com.
