MINERSVILLE, PA – It’s a Modified “Civil War” on Sunday, July 16 at Big Diamond Speedway.

Who will prevail?

The Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By VP invades the Coal Region of Pennsylvania for the annual ‘Anthracite Assault’ pitting the Halmar International North Region stars vs. the Velocita USA South Region talent in a 50-lap big-block/small-block Modified showdown paying $5,000 to win, $1,000 for 10th and $400 to take the green flag. This is the series’ only combination event of the season.

Four STSS North Region events are in the books with Sprakers, N.Y., star Stewart Friesen leading the standings by a mere 10 points over Montgomery, N.Y., talent Anthony Perrego (346-336). The fast-rising Perrego now owns two North wins this season, coming at Thunder Mountain Speedway in Center Lisle, N.Y., on Memorial Day weekend and most recently Accord (N.Y.) Speedway on July 3.

Two-time STSS champion Andy Bachetti is of Sheffield, Mass., is third with 324 points, followed by Billy Decker of Sidney, N.Y., accumulating 319 points and Jeremy Smith of Triangle, N.Y., with 291 markers.

A close battle rages in the STSS South Standings, with Boyertown, Pa., driver Ryan Watt – the most recent winner at Delaware International Speedway June 15 – leading by three points over Duane Howard of Oley, Pa., (241-238). Friesen, with 230 points, is third followed by Jimmy Horton of Neshanic Station, N.J., with 221 points and Milford, Del., driver Jordan Watson (208).

During the last two seasons, the “south” has risen. In 2016, Watt held off the advances of Friesen to take home the $5,000-plus top prize. A year prior (’15), Hellertown, Pa., native Rick Laubach kept Friesen at bay for the win.

STSS Sportsman battle 25 laps in Round No. 3 of the series for a $1,000 payday and Big Diamond’s full-fender Roadrunners take part in a points-paying main event on the docket, as well.

Unique to this event, Modifieds will utilize sail panels for the ‘Anthracite Assault’ – the only time all season at the three-eighths-mile oval.

Rules, prices, times and general information for the ‘Anthracite Assault’ have been posted on the STSS website: http://bdmotorsportsmedia.com/anthracite-assault-rules-prices-general-info/

Big Diamond Speedway is a three-eighths-mile clay oval located in Minersville, Pa., just miles from Pottsville. The facility offers free parking, state-of-the-art concession areas and restrooms and not a “bad seat” in the house, with hillside grandstands overlooking the on-track action. The speedway GPS address is 392 Forest Lane Pottsville, PA 17901. The official website is www.bigdspeedway.com.
