Rothzen, Six, Miller and Gaylord all get first wins at 34 Raceway

By Dana Royer/34 Raceway

BURLINGTON, IA (6-6-15) – After a couple weeks off due to rain it was back to action at 34 Raceway on beautiful night with 93 cars on hand. Four drivers picked up their first wins on the 3/8 mile for the 2015 season including Brandon Rothzen, Raritan, Il. (IMCA Modifieds), Bobby Six, Keokuk (IMCA Sport Mods), Larry Miller, Burlington (4 cylinders), and Brayden Gaylord, Wever (IMRA Midgets). Racing their way back to victory lane were Donnie Steward, West Burlington (305 Sprints), and Jake Wenig, Burlington (IMCA Stock Cars).

Coming up this week, Saturday, June 13 will be Casebine Credit Union Night with racing action from the W.T. Gabeline and Sons Trucking 305 Sprints, Ryner Transportation IMCA Modifieds, Casebine Credit Union IMCA Sport Mods, Pepsi IMCA Stock Cars, 34 Raceway 4 Cylinders and the STARS Mod Lites return for action.

Only 23 days left till 34 Raceway’s biggest race of the year when the World of Outlaw Sprint Cars will take on the high banked 3/8 mile. The best in sprint car racing will again take on 34 Raceway. Tickets are now on sale at SLSPROMOTIONS.COM. Purchase your general grandstand admission tickets at O’Reilly’s Auto Parts and receive a HUGE discount!

Feature race action got underway with the IMCA Sport Mods. Twelve cars took to the track with Dustan Fenton and Bobby Six on the front row. The number 6 of Six took the early lead followed by Kyle Hill and Fenton. Six continued to hold of Hill and Fenton for the first six laps before the first of two cautions would come out. On the restart Fenton continued to lead but Sean Wyett would move into the third spot. Wyett would later take over the second spot but a battle for third was going on between Hill and Austen Becerra. The second caution came out on lap fourteen of the fifteen lapper and Six would hold his lead and go on to take the checkered flag for his second feature win, his first ever at 34 Raceway. Wyett, Hill, Becerra and Brett Timmerman would round out the top five.

The IMRA Midgets would finish out their Engler IMRA Midget Nationals/Kevin Doty Memorial Race that was rained out on May 24. A nice field of sixteen cars took to the track for their 20 lap feature race with Brayden Gaylord and Dave Anderson on the front row. Anderson would take the early lead before a caution flag came out on lap five. A.J. Johnson would take advantage of the restart and take over the lead pulling away from the field. Johnson would take the checkered flag but would later be disqualified in post race tech due to a rim technicality. Gaylord, would be given the win by finishing behind Johnson, his first ever win and a $750 payday. Gaylord also won the IMRA Dash to top off his night. Aaron Schuck, Aaron Hull, Anderson and Ryan Jamison would round out the top five.

Donnie Steward took the checkered flag in the 305 Sprint feature taking the lead from pole sitter Travis Howard on lap three of the twenty lap race. The race was delayed when the red flag was thrown for Dillan Roth who took a hard hit in turn four. Roth was then taken to the hospital to be checked out. When racing resumed, Donnie Steward would take over the lead and pull away from the field. The yellow flag came out on lap twelve and would allow Justin Newberry to close the gap Steward had developed. But Steward could not be caught and went on to get his second win of the year. Newberry finished second followed by Cody Wehrle, Jacob Glasgow and Harold Pohren.

Dugan Thye and Rich Smith set the pace for the 20 lap, 15 car IMCA Modified feature. Smith took the early lead followed by Dean McGee. McGee took the lead from Smith on lap seven following a caution flag restart and would have to work to hold off Brandon Rothzen and Jeff Waterman. All three drivers put on a show for the crowd with some great racing. With two laps to go, Rothzen would finally be able to get by McGee and take the win for the first time this season at 34. McGee and Waterman battled for second with McGee edging out Waterman in the battle. Rich Smith and Tyler Glass would round out the top five.

The final race of the night saw thirteen IMCA Stock Cars in a twenty lap thriller. Chad Krogmeier took the lead from his front row start. There was plenty of back and forth, bumper to bumper, side by side action in this thriller. On lap six of the twenty lapper, Wenig would get by Krogmeier for the lead and had to work to keep it with Brett Timmerman, Tom Bowling, Jr., Shane Watts, and John Oliver right behind him. Late in the race, Wenig would begin to pull away but all eyes were on the battle for second between Timmerman, Bowling, Oliver and Watts with bumper to bumper, side by side action. Wenig took the checkered flag for the second time this year followed by Oliver, Watts, Bowling and Timmerman. Earlier in the race fans saw a few of the top five involved in a spin out in turn two but the caution had come out when Wenig had jumped the restart so all got their previous positions back.
