BRIDGEPORT, NJ – One of the most popular and successful drivers on the Pennsylvania small-block circuit – Doug Manmiller – is ready to do some traveling this season.

Manmiller, a standout competitor in the Keystone State at both Big Diamond and Grandview speedways during his career, has partnered with car owner Jason Miller to chase points on the second-year Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Hi-Tek in 2015.

The Shoemakersville, Pa., driver will attend all Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc. South Region presented by Scotty’s Speed & Diesel events. The first is set for Sunday, April 19 (rain date: April 26) at South Jersey’s Bridgeport Speedway. Manmiller also plans to compete in the vast majority of Bob Hilbert Sportswear North Region shows, slated to kick off Tuesday, April 7 at N.Y.’s Orange County Fair Speedway.

“It’s a great deal,” Manmiller, 47 years old, said of the STSS program. “The point fund is out there, it’s posted for everyone to see, and it pays good money all the way through. Every race on the series pays well, I think 10th is $1,000 at every show. For us, it made sense to try and put something together.”

Manmiller is driving a self-owned No. 00 358-Modified at Grandview this season, so the partnership with Miller – a former Late Model champion at the Bechtelsville, Pa., facility – was spawned for STSS events.

Miller, who owns an auto sales and repair business in Germansville, Pa., purchased a Bicknell car for Manmiller. The No. 44 (Miller’s Late Model number) will be outfitted with a Pat Morrison-built open small-block engine.

“I think it’s a good combination for the tracks we’ll be running,” stated an enthused Manmiller. “Our plan right now is to run all the South shows and, as long as we don’t get tore up too bad or run out of help, hit as many of the North shows as possible.

“I’m happy to have the opportunity to be part of the series thanks to Jason. We ran a few of the races last year up north and got some notes. I know we can be competitive.”

Manmiller sees the South Region schedule, with races at Bridgeport and New Egypt in New Jersey, Big Diamond in Pennsylvania and Delaware International and Georgetown in Delaware, as a viable option for teams in his area.

“It’s nice to see so many tracks down here working together,” Manmiller said. “There isn’t a whole lot of travel involved. It will be fun to race against some of the drivers you read about in the paper. I am looking forward to it.”

Bridgeport Speedway’s ‘South Jersey Shootout’ STSS South Region opening round will be headlined by a 40-lap Modified event offering $5,000 to the winner from a hefty purse. The event’s 10th-place finisher will receive $1,000, with $400 to take the green. There will be a long list of special awards, contingency prizes and bonuses, as well.

Bridgeport will not be in action on Saturday, April 18, meaning the Sunday event will serve as the weekend’s focal point at the track.

Unique to the ‘South Jersey Shootout’ event: both the outer five-eighths-mile track and inner quarter-mile will be in action on the same day. While the Modifieds, Sportsman and Outlaw Stocks will compete on the big track, Doug Borger’s XCel 600 Modified series is set to do battle on the inner oval with a $1,000 winner’s purse posted. Fans will get to see action on two tracks for one price.

The rules for the ‘South Jersey Shootout’ have been established with staggered weight limits for a competitive balance among “Delaware” big-blocks, standard big-blocks and a variety of small-block powerplants. The rule structure should encourage a diverse field to converge on Bridgeport for the South Region lid-lifter.
