139Malta, NY – The Albany-Saratoga Speedway closed out the 2016 points season Friday evening and when all was said and done, a new face entered the history books as a track champion and a two-time titlist became a three-time champion.

Coming into the night’s action Marc Johnson trailed Brett Hearn by one point in the race for the 2016 Upstate GMC Dealers DIRTcar Modified track championship. When the checkered flag waved over the field Johnsons fifth place finish earned him his first track championship at the four tenths of a mile clay oval.

In the Sportsman division Jeremy Pitts came into the night with a one-point lead over Connor Cleveland. Pitts crossed the finish line in sixth, one spot ahead of Cleveland. This gave the championship to Pitts. Pitts was also track champion in 2013 and 2014.

202Stewart Friesen won the 35 lap Upstate GMC Dealers DIRTcar Modified feature event. The win was the sixth of the season for the Sprakers, New York resident and it solidified the third position in the final points standings. Jesse Mueller finished second with Kenny Tremont, Jr. third, Mark Kislowski fourth and Johnson fifth. Hearn would lead the second top five finishers with Ronnie Johnson, Elmo Reckner, Bobby Hackel, IV and Keith Flach completing the top five.

The final point standings would see Johnson winning the title by one point over Hearn, Friesen, Tremont and Ronnie Johnson.

The Sportsman division would see Cody Bleau pick up the feature win. The win was his first of the season at the Great Race Place and came over Daryl Nutting, Tim Hartman, Jr., Mike Ostrander and Chris Johnson. The second five would see Pitts, Cleveland, Derek McGrew, Robert Bublak and Adam McAuliffe.

131The final point standings would see Pitts by three points over Cleveland, Hartman, Johnson and Chad Edwards.

Walt Brownell won the 25 lap DIRTcar Pro Stock feature event. The win was Brownell’s second of the season. Brownell crossed the line first with Robbie Speed second, Jeff Washburn third, Dan Older, Sr. fourth and Kenny Gates fifth. The remainder of the top ten would be Nick Stone, Norm Loubier, Dave DePaulo, Brandon Emigh and Dean Charbonneau. Speed was crowned track champion over Brownell, Emigh, Kim Duell and Older.

Nick Fretto won the 20 lap Limited Sportsman feature event. Derek Bornt finished second with James Meehan third, Ryan Heath fourth and Stephen Kneer fifth.

Josh Coonradt won the 20 lap Street Stock feature event. The win was Coonradt’s seventh of the season at Albany-Saratoga. Paul Mulrain finished second with Jason Meltz third, David Shippee fourth and Al Relyea fifth.

Ben Grant was victorious in the Greg’s Towing and Repair Single Cam Four Cylinder feature event. Robert Garney finished second with Brett Horlacher third. Steve Ryan was the winner in the Dual Cam division. His win came over Dave Mullineaux and Pete Vila.

The Albany-Saratoga Speedway returns to action Friday evening with the biggest Sportsman event in the region. The division will take center stage with the Northeast Crate Nationals. Also on the card will be a 40 lap event for the Small Block Modifieds and events for the CRSA RaceSaver 305 Sprint Car Series and Meltz Lumber Street Stocks.
