Good NEWS! There Is Finally A Cheaper Sprint Car Concept In The Northeast – By: Pete MacDonald

If you were at the PPB Motorsports 2015 Expo in Oaks, Pennsylvania back in January, odds are you walked by, stopped, or at least looked at one of the two NEWS Sprint Cars that were in attendance. For those asking what NEWS is, it stands for North East Wingless Sprint Cars which are to be run at the Accord Speedway in New York and New Egypt Speedway located in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey .

PM3_012515_0190 “With a high end competitive 305 Sprint Car engine approaching the $25,000 mark, we were trying to find an affordable Sprint Car class that we can build on for years to come. Many fans across the region have been asking for a Wingless Sprint Car class for a while and with them being self-starting, teams won’t have to spend money on an ATV or worrying about push trucks to push the car off, and our existing Crate Modified teams can even use the same motor they have now with just a few modifications.” said New Egypt Speedway owner Fred Vahlsing.

The NEWS Sprint Car is pretty much your basic wingless sprint car with a Crate 602 engine that is fueled with a carburetor as opposed to the ever so expensive fuel injection that is Self-Starting (yes it has a transmission, starter and a battery) so now there is no need to push the car off in the pit area in order to put heat in the motor, you can do it right in your pit spot without having to ever leave. If you do it right, you can build a used car from between $12-18,000 and a brand new car for anywhere in between $20-25,000 . Most of the parts on the car are Spec which means you can only run a Spec Box Stock 750 Holley carburetor, no high dollar adjustable shocks and an spec  American Racer tire rule to help keep costs down. And for those wondering, yes they will still run on Methanol.

” I think it’s going to take a year or so to get the car count up there but I’ve had a lot of guys come over to look at my car and love it, One of our drivers was looking at buying a Spec Sportsman to race with here, but as soon as he came and looked at my car he wanted to buy mine”, said Gary Palmer who is Accord Speedway’s owner and promoter.PM3_012515_0187

With more and more tracks switching over to Wingless 600cc Micro Sprints weekly and the American Racing Drivers Club (ARDC) Midgets running more and more on smaller speedways, maybe this isn’t such a bad time to start something up like this around here. For what it costs to put together a competitive Micro right now, you can have a “big” car and go faster for relatively the same price and still travel around. Right now plans call for Accord to run them weekly and New Egypt to campaign them on a bi-weekly basis.

The NEWS Class has just put together a Facebook page that can be found at https://www.facebook.com/NorthEastWinglessSprints
