(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) The dust has settled from Saturday’s Double Points Night at Bowman Gray Stadium, with the points races for each division tightening up even more.
Tim Brown of Tobaccoville entered Saturday with an 18-point lead over Burt Myers of Walnut Cove in the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series. Brown qualified on the pole with a fast car and continued his good luck streak when the
competitors randomly drew for starting position: Brown plucked third for his starting spot.
Brown slipped by Cale Gale of Winston-Salem to move into second and began to threaten Danny Bohn in the lead. Bohn held strong, however, and Brown was unable to shake him.
Brown’s points rival, Burt Myers, wasn’t too far behind with a starting spot of seventh. Myers fought forward for restart after restart to eventually get on Brown’s bumper in third.
As the two passed lapped traffic, Myers daringly sandwiched himself in between Brown and the slower car. They headed three-wide into the turn, bumping cars and battling for position. Myers got the better of the situation,
muscling past Brown to take over second.
“I saw an opportunity there to try to make a pass on the 83 and it worked out for us,” said Myers. “We came here to race. It wasn’t anything malicious or dirty. I got there, and we were three-wide – and then the hole closed up.
When you’re three-wide and everybody’s going in the corner, do you draw straws to see who’s going to check up?”
Myers was able to gain four points on Brown, chipping Brown’s lead down to only 14 points. “We gained a couple points, but right now I want a trophy,” said Myers. “We started out hot, and it’s been since the first two weeks since
we’ve won.”
In the Farm Bureau Sportsman Series, Tommy Neal of Walkertown was knocking on the door of taking the checkered in both of the 20-lap races on Saturday. He ended up leaving without a checkered, but Neal did manage an
impressive second and fourth place finish. Neal has stated that the championship is on his mind this year, so the normally ultra-aggressive driver was pleased with his finishes.
Taylor Branch of Lewisville maintains the points lead but Neal’s performance cuts Branch’s lead from 30 points down to 20 points. Michael Adams of Yadkinville ranks third, close on the heels of Neal.
Derrick Rice of Kernersville grabbed the checkered in the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series, moving him into the points lead. Steven Berrier of Germanton finished second on Saturday to stay just four points behind Rice.
Brian Wall of Winston-Salem drops out of the points lead down to third.
In the McDowell Heating & Air Stadium Stock Series, Brandon Brendle of Winston-Salem falls down to second in the points rankings. Chuck Wall of Lexington takes over the points lead after finishing fourth.
The championship fights continue this Saturday – as well as some other intense action on the track. It’s the Great Clips Night of Destruction presented by 600 WSJS. Monster trucks will put on a car crushing exhibition, and the
night will end with the bone-jarring thrills of the 109 U-Pull-It Demolition Derby. And, of course, there will be racing for the Modified, Sportsman, Street Stock, and Stadium Stock Divisions.
Gates open at 6:00 for practice, and the first race begins at 8:00 PMthis Saturday night. Ticket prices, directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by calling (336) 723-1819.
