WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. ~ Auto racing fans have a big event to look forward to this Saturday (May 6) with four divisions of racecars competing in “cone races” during a five division racing program. Current plans call for spectator seating to open at 5:00 p.m. on this “Cinco De Mayo Fiesta” themed night, with qualifying slated for 5:45 p.m. Main event action will follow around 7:00 p.m.

On the famous third mile high-banked paved oval the Freehold Ford Modifieds will lead the way in a 40-lap main event. The Snap-on Sportsman racers will compete in a 25-lap main event, the O’Shea’s Auto Repair Factory Stocks will battle in a 25-lapper and the Green Flag Driving Experience Legend Cars will also battle in a 25-lap main event. All four feature events will be cone races. In addition, the touring Three-Quarter Midgets will race in a non-cone 25-lap race on the fifth mile “inner oval.”

In a “Cone Race” a traffic cone is placed on the backstretch at the one-to-go sign for a restart. Any driver can choose to go inside the cone or outside the cone. If the first four drivers choose the inside, for example, the fifth place driver can choose the outside and move up to the front row. Does a driver take the preferred inside groove and restart further back on the inside, or does he or she choose the shorter line of cars on the outside and hope he or she can make it stick? That’s the issue each driver will face on each restart.

The evening’s “Cinco De Mayo Fiesta” themed night will feature music of the holiday on the public address system, special activities including a limbo contest and Mexican food specials.

Saturday’s schedule will see the competitor pit area open at 1:00 p.m. Regular practice will start at 3:00 p.m., while spectator seating will open at 5:00 p.m. Qualifying will then begin at 5:45 p.m. and feature race action for all divisions is slated for 7:00 p.m.
