Clay Butler, Eric Palmer, Mark Bitner, and John Carpenter Take the Checkers and the Championship at New Egypt Speedway

New Egypt, NJ–                               It was a great night to be a race winner at New Egypt Speedway on Saturday night. All four of the division race victors also captured the 2015 division championships in the Sportsman, Crate Modified, NERS Sprint, and Street Stock divisions.

DSC_001 Clay Butler led the way of race winners becoming champions in the Sportsman feature. Jimmy Amato and Derek Krum led the field to take the green with Krum jumping out in front coming off of turn two. Krum would lead as the green flag laps clicked by until lap six when JT Trstensky took the lead from Krum going into turn two. Meanwhile Clay Butler had made his way up to third to battle Krum for second position on lap seven. The caution would come out on the next lap starting the leader Trstensky side by side with Butler. On the restart Butler would use the outside going into turn one to take the lead from Trstensky. While Butler sailed around in the lead there was a three wide battle for third position with Mike Hendershot, Steve Davis, and Derek Krum. But it was all Butler all the way to the checkers and the 2015 Sportsman division championship. Following Butler to the line was JT Trstensky, Steve Davis, Brandon Grosso, and Mike Lyons.

DSC_010    In what was the closest point battle of the night with nine drivers having a chance at the division title, the Crate Modified event went down to the wire with Eric Palmer winning the feature event on his way to his third Crate Modified championship in the last four years. Point leader heading into the night Ryan Simmons was caught up in an early wreck when the leader Jarrett Rozycki spun going into turn two collecting several cars and had him coming from the back of the pack. Palmer and third place point man Jordon Cox were able to avoid the wreck while Simmons and second place point man Frank Dorry were both involved. After the caution Brian Papiez was able to take the lead and looked in contention to take the championship when a belt broke ending his night. That handed the lead to fourth place point man Brandon Grosso with Cox and Palmer lined up behind him. Palmer jumped around Cox and into second and battled side by side with Grosso for the next two laps before powering around him and into the lead coming off of turn two. Grosso would charge back on the following lap but would jump Palmer’s right rear tire going into turn two and losing four positions. Palmer would lead the rest of the way on his way to the championship. Finishing second was Jordon Cox, Frank Dorry, Brandon Grosso, and Ebby Ridge.

DSC_006     In another thrilling points battle in the Street Stock division John Carpenter came into the night with a four point lead over Bill Liedtka. In the first of two Street Stock features Carpenter and Liedtka would battle for most of the race starting on lap five. Lietka maintained the lead but not without a fight from Carpenter. However, it was Liedtka taking the win and tying the point battle going into the second feature event. Following Liedtka and Carpenter to the line were Darren Cox, Gary Klimeczak, and Dan Collamer. Carpenter and Liedtka would start side by side on the fourth row of the second feature tied for the point lead. Lietka would get the early jump on Carpenter making his way quickly into second place while Carpenter had a harder time fighting his way up to third while Dan Collamer led. In the closing laps Collamer, Liedtka, and Carpenter would exchange the lead several times until Lietka spun on the backstretch setting up Collamer to take the win and Carpenter to finish second. Collamer would be disqualified for refusing to take his car through tech making Carpenter the official race winner and the 2015 Street Stock division champion. Finishing second was Bill Liedtka followed by Billy Wroble, Darren Cox, and Everett Taylor.

DSC_003 The NERS Sprint division saw second place point man Mark Bitner start on the pole for the feature event. Bitner came into the night seven points behind leader Mike Haggenbottom. It was all Bitner all race staying out front of Adam Carberry who gave heavy chase around the half way mark of the event pulling right up to the back on Bitner’s rear for several laps coming off of turn 4. But in the end it was Bitner who captured the checkered flag and the 2015 NERS Sprint division championship. Following Bitner and Adam Carberry to the checkers were Mike Haggenbottom, Tommy Carberry, and Dave Brown.

The NEWS wingless sprints had their largest field of the season with 11 cars including two invaders from Accord Speedway. Leading the field to the green flag was Rich Mellor who took the early lead but it was Neal Williams coming quickly through the field from his ninth starting position. Williams would take the lead from Mellor on lap eight as Bobby Sandt, Jr. also made quick work through the field in his first NEWS feature event. There was lots of side by side and three and four wide racing throughout the field for the 15 lap feature event. In the end it was Neal Williams in Victory Lane followed by Bobby Sandt Jr., Ryan Krachun, Sam LaMothe, and Johnny Cornell.
