_MG_0260Mechanicsburg Pa.-March 25, 2016-Central Pennsylvania is known throughout the nation as one of the biggest hotbeds for Sprint Car racing.

There are drivers entrenched in this region that stack up well against the best in the business. As for the fans clamoring to local speedways, their passion is unmatched and in some cases borders on fanatical.

It’s about excellence and embracing your own. And anyone outside the area traveling to Williams Grove, Lincoln or Port Royal Speedway gets a quick dose of Pennsylvania pride by the time the first heat rolls out.

But like other regions and traveling series — California, the World of Outlaws, All Star Circuit of Champions and now the Midwest — central Pennsylvania isn’t without issues, both good and bad.

Here is a quick look at some of the topics fans will be talking about throughout the 2016 central Pennsylvania Sprint Car season.

Keep an eye on car counts. We don’t want to get carried away too early on this one, but there is some concern floating around early in the season. Lincoln Speedway is averaging 23.3 cars in three races with a low of 21 and high of 26. Port Royal has held two shows and had 25 for the opener and 22 a week ago with Lincoln dark because of weather. Williams Grove had 26 for the opener, but two cars were from western Pennsylvania and it’s hard to say who will be a regular. Some of the blame is directed at the early start and teams not being ready, but rising costs in the sport are also a factor. One has to wonder if the car counts are low now when teams have winter cabin fever and more money, what will it be like in August? Hopefully, this is a phase and not a glimpse of things to come.
