Billy Whittaker Returns To Fulton Speedway Modified Victory Lane; Championship Night Saturday, September 3; Outlaw 200 Weekend Tickets Available

FULTON, NY – August 27, 2016 – July 2, 1994 was the last time Billy Whittaker won a modified race at the Fulton Speedway. It had also been over a decade since Whittaker got out from behind the wheel of a race car to build a highly successful business, Billy Whittaker Cars Trux before returning to racing in 2015.

Saturday night in the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment DIRTcar Modified feature Whittaker took the lead on lap 5 from Brett Wright and the rest of the distance had to hold off serious challenges from Tim Kerr late in the race for one of the most popular victory lane celebrations of the season after a roof dance on his Billy Whittaker Cars & Trux No.109.

Other winners on Burke’s Do-It-Best Home Centers were, Ron Davis III (Sportsman) Kevan Cook (Late Models) Torrey Stoughtenger & Kyle Perry (Novice Sportsman) Chris Bonoffski (4-CYL).

Brett Wright and Katelyn Hile would pace the field down to the green to start the 35 lap modified feature with Wright snagging the early advantage.

After a couple early caution periods Billy Whittaker would grab the lead a lap 5 restart, using the the bottom groove of the speedway.

At the 10 lap mark Whittaker was still quick on the bottom, opening a ten car length advantage, while behind the leader Tim Sears Jr. and Tim Kerr ran inches apart for second and third with Chris Hile and Adam Roberts showing in the top five.

Whittaker was still on rails when the lap counter showed lap 15 as he continued to lengthen his lead as Kerr looked for a way to close the gap. Sears, Hile and Pat Ward battled for third through fifth. Larry Wight and Jimmy Phelps, who were only six points apart at the top of the standings, battled for sixth and seventh.

After trying different grooves on the speedway Kerr cut Whittaker’s lead down to just a couple cars. Behind the top two you could have thrown a blanket over Sears, Hile and Ward as they raced within inches of each other in a top five fight.

With 10 laps to go Whittaker and Kerr separated themselves from the rest of the field as they battled at the front. Hile ran alone in third with Sears and Ward side by side for fourth and fifth.

On lap 27 the yellow would wave when Larry Wight and Jimmy Phelps made contact racing for the same real estate coming off turn two down the back straight. Phelps’ night would end with front end damage.

Over the remaining laps Tim Kerr would throw everything he had at Billy Whittaker but to no avail as Whittaker never moved off of the groove he ran the entire distance blasting under the checkers by a slim 00.365 of a second over Kerr. Chris Hile, Tim Sears Jr. and Pat Ward finished third through fifth.

In the 25 lap SUNY Canton Sportsman feature Nick Krause would set a quick pace out front from the drop of the green that had two and three wide racing behind him throughout the field.

At the 10 lap point Krause held a five car length advantage as Mike Phelps was trying different grooves on the speedway trying to close in. Chris Mackey, Mike Button and Tyler Trump were in a tight fight for third through fifth.

A quick yellow would wave on lap 13 wiping out the two-second lead Krause built up. On the restart Phelps took advantage as he blasted into the lead on lap 14. Krause would bring out the yellow when he spun while running second.

The difference in the race was on a lap 13 yellow and restart when Ron Davis III went from eighth to third. After moving into second it would take Davis just two laps to work his way by Phelps. Once out front Davis pulled away for an over two second win at the checkers. Mike Phelps, Tyler Trump, Chris Cunningham and Jim Spano finished second through fifth.

With his victory Ron Davis III is the 2016 SUNY Canton Sportsman Track Champion.

The 20 lap Billy Whittaker Cars & Trux Late Model feature was a barnburner from the drop of the green to the checkers. Kevan Cook led every lap but he had to hold off challenges from Steve Coit, AJ Kingsley and over the last 8 laps Bret Belden threw everything he had at Cook running bumper to bumper and side by side that saw Cook win by a narrow 00.387 at the checkers over Belden. AJ Kingsley, Sean Beardsley and Chris Fleming finished third through fifth.

In the first 15 lap E&V Energy Novice Sportsman feature Torrey Stoughtenger took the lead at the drop of the green and led every lap. The win was anything but easy as he had to hold off heavy pressure over the final laps from John Strickler and Joey Buonagurio. Jimmy Moyer and Aaron Backus finished fourth and fifth.

In the second 15 lap E&V Energy Novice Sportsman feature Rachel Zacharias looked to have things going her way leading the from the drop of the green. On lap 9 she clipped a uke tire damaging the front end ending her night. On lap 10 Kyle Perry took over the lead and went on to his second consecutive win.

Quinn Wallis led the opening 7 laps of the 15 lap JB Logging & Firewood Four Cylinder feature before Chris Bonoffski who started 11th took over the lead. Once out front Bonoffski drove away for his fourth win of the year. Dakota Bechler, Ray Bechler, Quinn Wallis and Justin Buske finished second through fifth.

Over 30 cars signed in the pits for Kings Smash Em Crash Em youth and small car demo derbies. Dylan Nichols out of South New Berlin, NY took the win in the youth and Robert Hartman from Poland, NY won the small car.

This Saturday, September 3, 2016 Track Champions will be crowned on Championship night presented by Regional Truck and Trailer. Racing on the ‘Highbanks’ will be the Tracey Road Equipment DIRTcar Modifieds, SUNY Canton Sportsman, Billy Whittaker Cars & Trux RUSH Late Models, E&V Energy Novice Sportsman and JB Logging & Firewood Four Cylinders.

Adult grandstand admission is $12 with everyone 18 years old and younger free, pits $27. Gates will open at 5:00 with racing at 7:00.
