Malta, NY – The Albany-Saratoga Speedway kicked off Memorial Day Weekend in style Friday evening as the fast, four tenths of a mile oval produced a thrilling night of action in all divisions. Taking top honors in the Upstate GMC Dealers DIRTcar Modified division was Kenny Tremont, Jr. The win for the Sand Lake Slingshot was his second in a row and 64th of his career and earned him a guaranteed starting spot in the Mr. DIRT Track USA event at the Lebanon Valley Speedway.

In other action Jeremy Pitts (Sportsman), Kenny Martin, Jr. (DIRTcar Pro Stock), Chris Ronca (Limited Sportsman), Randy Miller (Street Stock) and Steve Ryan (Greg’s Towing and Repair Four Cylinders) also were victorious.

Justin Barber and Brian Whittemore led the field to the green with Barber taking the early lead over Alex Bell, Whittemore, Bobby Hackel, IV and Rich Ronca. The first of four caution periods slowed the field on lap one when sixth place starter Neil Stratton spun in turn two. Bell would lead on the restart only to have the caution flag wave again on lap two, this time for Matt Delorenzo who slowed in turn four.

When racing resumed Bell controlled the lead with Barber, Whittemore, Marc Johnson and Jimmy Cottrell following. Johnson wasted little time in getting to the front, he moved his Troyer machine to second past Whittemore on lap four with Cottrell following to third. Within a lap Johnson was all over race leader Bell. Bell was momentarily saved on lap six when Stratton again spun in turn two, forcing the yellow flag to wave.

On the restart Johnson took the lead with Bell, Cottrell, 14th place starter Tremont and Hackel following. Tremont then began to make his charge. He moved past Cottrell for third on lap nine as Elmo Reckner took fifth from Hackel. Tremont moved to second on lap 12 while at the same time 15th place starter Brett Hearn moved into fifth. Hearn took over fourth from Cottrell on lap 13 as the leaders approached heavy slower traffic.

Peter Britten moved his Troyer machine into fifth on lap 18 while Hearn took over third a lap later. By lap 20 the leaders were engulfed in heavy lapped traffic. This allowed Tremont to close right in on the back bumper of Johnson and Hearn to close in on them both. The trio entertained the crowd by battling for the lead through extremely heavy slower traffic.

By lap 24 Johnson and Tremont had cleared the heaviest of the traffic. Johnson again came upon traffic on lap 26, this time though they would not slow him down as he made an amazing move to split two drivers and open up some breathing room between himself and Tremont.

The final caution period slowed the field on lap 29 when Jesse Mueller came to a stop on the front stretch. The double file restart would bring Tremont right alongside Johnson. When racing resumed Johnson powered to the lead but Tremont and Hearn were right there. Bell and Britten rounded out the top five.

On lap 31 Tremont made a power move through turns three and four stick as he was able to go around Johnson on the outside of turn four to take the lead. Once out front Tremont would not be denied his 64th career win at the Great Race Place.

Tremont picked up the win with Johnson second, Hearn third, Bell fourth and 22nd place starter Ronnie Johnson completing the top five. Heat races for the 29 car field were won by Hearn, Rich Ronca and Tremont.

Jeremy Pitts picked up the 25 lap Sportsman division feature event. The win was the second in a row for the defending and two time track champion and eighth of his career.

Jack Bublak and Jack Speshock led the field to the green with Bublak taking the early lead. Bublak held the lead through three restarts during the first 11 laps of the event. On the final restart he had Hunter Bates pressuring him with Pitts in third. Pitts took over second from Bates on lap 17 and set his sights on Bublak. Bublak, a three time Limited Sportsman feature winner held off Pitts until lap 19 when he moved the Grennon Project Services number 27p to the lead.

Once out front Pitts would pull away for the win over a hard charging Rocky Warner, Bates, Speshock and Bublak. Heat races for the 31 car field were won by John Proctor, Jon Miller, Bublak and Speshock.

Kenny Martin, Jr. won the exciting 25 lap DIRTcar Pro Stock feature event.  The win was the first of the season for Martin and the sixth of his career at the track. Norm Loubier was the first to lead the event. He held the top spot before giving way to Jeff Washburn on lap three. Washburn commanded the top spot through lap nine when he gave way to Kim Duell. Duell led until lap 15 when Martin took over. Martin picked up the win over Duell, Bernie Companion, Brandon Emigh and Robbie Speed. Heat races for the 23 car field were won by Companion, Cale Kneer and Bill Smith.

Chris Ronca picked up his first career Limited Sportsman feature event. Ronca took the lead from Rob Lanfear on lap nine and pulled away to the win. Ken Conroy finished second with Chris Curtis third, Bob Schmidt fourth and Scott Flanders fifth. Heat races for the 22 car field were won by Lanfear, Ronca and Schmidt.

Randy Miller picked up his third consecutive Street Stock feature event win over a strong 21 car field. Miller took the lead from early race leader Jason Meltz on lap 15 and cruised home for the win. Meltz finished second with Bill Duprey third, Josh Coonradt fourth and Al Relyea fifth.

Steve Ryan won his second Greg’s Towing and Repair Four Cylinder feature event of the season. Ryan bested a 12 car field. Ryan crossed the finish line first ahead of Ken Stager, Phil DeFiglio, Mike Parodi and Ben Grant.
