We Knew It Was Coming, But We Didn’t Want To Believe It
By: Pete MacDonald
The news finally came down on Tuesday what we were all thinking all along but didn’t want to believe. Super DIRT Week will take place at a new venue in 2016. It felt like a little piece of me died when it was finally put out there. I’ve missed one SDW since 2005, when I was finally able to drive up there and planned on never missing another one. But now I’m thinking twice about that.
So now what? Where do we move it to?
If Super DIRT Week isn’t held on something close to a mile, say it gets moved to Rolling Wheels or Central New York Raceway Park, it feels like it’ll just be another long-distance race. Say what you want about it but that’s part of what made Syracuse what it was, the gimmick of racing on “The Moody Mile.” It was a great equalizer that was only used once a year which I think added to the novelty of it. It would be like taking the Daytona 500 from Daytona and moving it to Bristol Motor Speedway and still calling it the Daytona 500. It’ll just never be the same.
My fear is that it will get moved to a smaller race track that can’t accommodate as many fans and campers and embody the whole atmosphere of Syracuse. It won’t be deemed a financial success and the plug will be pulled on what is one of the greatest races on the eastern seaboard. I know for a fact that it’s a pretty big money maker as it sits right now.
If I had my druthers I would move it to Nazareth in Pennsylvania. It sits at just under a mile, you have about as much room as you do at the New York State Fairgrounds for pit area maybe even more, plenty of room for camping and seating, plus the race track is already there equipped with a pit road. It would just need clay.
Would that happen?
I doubt it. But I think it’s the best solution out there right now.
