THOMPSON, Conn. —October 15, 2016- Back in April, Timmy Solomito left the IceBreaker at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park with the winning trophy behind the wheel of his Diversified Metals, Flamingo Motorsports, No. 16.
His quest to end the season the way he started — in victory lane at Thompson — is off to a perfect start so far. Solomito was the fastest car in qualifying and took down the Coors Light Pole Award for Sunday’s NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Sunoco World Series 150 during the session on Saturday afternoon.
Solomito’s fast lap of 18.677 seconds came in the middle of the session and held up right through the end. The pole was his third career NWMT pole, his first on the high-banks of Thompson and second of the 2016 season.
“We had a really good car in practice, we made some minor adjustments and Sly (crew chief) made a really good call before qualifying and we hit it just right,” Solomito said. “I thought the No. 2 (Doug Coby) was going to have something for us, but it was good to see us pull ahead of him there at the end.”
It will be the second straight World Series front row start for Solomito, who qualified second last season for the 150 lap season-ending main event. He is a four time winner in 2016 (Thompson, Riverhead, Monadnock and Seekonk) and is hoping to capture a fifth on Sunday afternoon.
Beside Solomito at the green will be championship leader Doug Coby, who comes into Sunday’s feature race with a 20 point advantage in the championship standings over Justin Bonsignore. Coby was one of the final three cars to hit the track but was not able to knock off Solomito’s time.
Woody Pitkat qualified third, with Rob Summers putting up an impressive fourth place time. Rounding out the top five was Bristol winner Eric Goodale.
Tomorrow, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Sunoco World Series 150 is slated to go green just after 3:45 p.m.
