STEVEN REED OVERCOMES INJURY TO WIN WALL STADIUM MODIFIED RACE SATURDAYDSC_0244

WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. ~ Racing with a severely sprained right wrist suffered here on opening night one week age Steven Reed raced to victory in the 40-lap main event for the Downs Ford Modified stock cars at Wall Stadium Speedway Saturday night. It was his first win of the year.

Reed jumped to the lead early and tested his injured wrist through 29 laps of non-stop racing. The first of two cautions waved when Justin Gumley went spinning on the backstretch before Renee Dupuis of Glastonbury, Ct. forced the second caution on lap 31 with an apparent blown engine.

All the while Reed held his ground as a battle for the remaining top five spots raged behind him. Toms River’s Derek Hopkinson picked his way through the field to finish second at the stripe while Howell’s ken Woolley, Jr., Holmdel’s Andrew Krause and Zack Alspach of Willingboro wrapped up the top five.

“The wrist really wasn’t too bad,” Reed said after the race. “Over the winter any dad and I went over everything with this car to make it faster. Tonight it paid off as it was pretty much perfect. We got lucky going the first 29 laps without a challenge. The car was up to it and I hope to win more as the season goes on.”

Second generation driver Robby Walton of Tuckerton battled his way to the front of the pack and went on to win his first ever main event in the 30-lapper for the Snap-on Sportsman cars. Scott Brannick of Brick led the first 14 laps while Walton picked his way through the top five. Walton powered to the front on lap 14 just moments before Brannick’s mount slammed the third turn rail. He was not injured.

Walton then raced on to the win over Krause, Brick’s Dom Fattaruso, Kenny Van Wickle of Manasquan and Howell’s Chris Lane who recovered from an earlier accident.

Wall’s Brien Crosby raced to his second 25-lap win in the Green Monster Insulation 4 Cylinder Stock feature race. In a contest that saw the top four drivers swapping positions most of the way Alonzo Morales of Burlington crossed the finish line second with Brick’s Ronnie Mullen, Corey Stockert of Toms River and Wall’s Allan Camp wrapping up the top five.

Vinny Troia led the 25-lap Green Flag Driving Experience feature race from start to finish to claim his first win of the year. With the top three running in a tight pack Wall’s Robert French was second and defending champ Brian Spencer of Edison was third. Louie Keraitis of Toms River and Steve Minghenelli of Sewell were fourth and fifth.

Joey Helberg of Union won a non-stop 35-lap feature for the O’Shea’s Auto Repair Factory Stocks over Jerry Koenig of Merrick, N.Y., Brick’s Joe Mongeau, Marty Van Druten of Toms River and Wall’s Tiffany Olejnik. The event was the first of a Triple Crown Series for the division with the next event set for May 9.

Dominic Casola of Holmdel had the field covered as he won the 20-lap feature for the Elite Maintenance Limited Late Models. Anthony Crimaldi of Port Monmouth, Jackson’s Howie Conk, John Vullo of Ronkonkoma, N.Y. and Wall’s Cole Ormsbee were second through fifth.
