For the second year in a row, Scott Speed rolled the dice at Red Bull Global Rallycross Atlantic City and came out on top. Last year’s event winner took both victories on offer in this weekend’s doubleheader, punctuated by a runaway victory in the Sunday main event, to further extend his Supercar championship lead over teammate Tanner Foust.
“To be honest, that race was plan A!” Speed admitted from the podium. “It went the way we hope every race does. The Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross Beetle is on rails and super fast, but to be fair, these guys are catching up and it’s getting tight! I’m really looking forward to a competitive last half of the season. We’re going to have to be on our A game, but fortunately, we got some great points this weekend, and that gives us the points lead. Now we just have to hold on!”
Speed, who had already posted a perfect round on Saturday after winning every session, was even faster on Sunday. Unlike his first main event win of the weekend, which came after chasing down Patrik Sandell in the race’s closing laps, the Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross driver took an immediate lead in the first corner and never looked back. While the rest of the Supercar field, including Sandell, Steve Arpin, and Sebastian Eriksson jostled for second, Speed extended a comfortable lead to coast to his fourth win of the season, and third in a row.
In GRC Lites, Conner Martell grabbed his second victory of the season after holding off points leader and Saturday winner Cyril Raymond for the entire final. However, Raymond’s hopes of another podium came to a screeching halt when mechanical failure just before the finish line dropped him to sixth in the final results.
