SUSQUEHANNA, PA………. For the second consecutive week, Dan Pompey was victorious at Penn Can Speedway in the Modified main event. Pompey raced from sixth to claim his second win in as many tries. Defending Sportsman champion Ryan Olsommer picked up where he left off in 2014 with his first win of the season Friday. The CRSA Sprint cars made their first appearance of the year at the speedway with Scott Goodrich picking up the win. Doug Stack Jr. claimed his first career Street Stock feature win, with Frank Kennedy claiming top honors in the 4 Cylinders, and Buck Mills Sr. picking up the win in the Factory Stock feature.

21 Modifieds were on hand for the second race of 2015 at the Penn Can Speedway. Scranton, PA’s Bob Trapper and Binghamton, NY’s Joey Colsten led the field to the green flag for the 30 lapper. Trapper wasted no time taking his number 69 machine to the lead.

Despite back-to-back cautions on laps 3 and 4, Trapper was quickly able to open up a 5-car length advantage over Joey Colsten. By lap 5, last week’s feature winner Dan Pompey was able to move into third from sixth on the starting grid. On lap 6, the caution flag would fly again for a pileup in turn one. At this point, the top 5 saw Trapper the leader over Colsten, Pompey, Kevin Hartnett, and Brian Malcolm.

On the ensuing restart, Pompey began to apply the pressure to Colsten’s number 151 as they battled for second. Trapper again opened up a sizeable advantage as the battle raged behind him. The caution flag would again fly on lap 10, this time for Joey Grammes. When the green flag again flew, Pompey wasted no time making a move to work around Colsten for position two. Meanwhile, Greenfield Township’s Nick Petrilak cracked into the top 5 from ninth, showing that the topside was coming in.

The battle continued in the front of the pack with Pompey now pressuring Trapper lap after lap for the lead. Trapper finally surrendered the lead on lap 13 to Pompey who made an inside pass to claim the top spot.

By the midway point of the 30-lap feature, Pompey led over Trapper, Colsten, Malcolm, and Nick Rochinski now completing the top 5. In the immediate laps to follow, defending track champion Kevin Hartnett let his presence be known by moving into third, then making quick work of Trapper to move into second. Rochinski was able to follow Hartnett through, as he would take over the number three spot.

As the race entered the final 5 laps, Hartnett had caught Pompey’s back bumper and began to pressure for the lead. Rochinski continued to run third a few car lengths back, with Malcolm, and Mike Colsten now rounding out the top 5. As Pompey worked the bottom groove of the speedway, Hartnett ran the extreme high side in the closing laps. Coming off of turn 4 on the final lap the crowd was on their feet as Hartnett momentarily was side by side with Pompey for the lead. Pompey was able to hold off the strong challenge of Hartnett en route to his second consecutive win at the speedway. Hartnett, Rochinski, Malcolm, Mike Colsten, Trapper, Ken Titus, Alan Rudalavage, Mike Loney, and Joey Colsten completed the top 10.

In the Crate Sportsman 20 lap feature, defending track champion Ryan Olsommer was able to claim his first victory of the 2015-racing season. Randy Gates looked to be the car to beat in the early stages of the event as he led the first 13 laps in dominating fashion. Olsommer, who started sixth, wasted no time moving up to second just 7 laps into the race. On lap 14, Olsommer made a move that would stick, giving him the lead for good. In the closing laps, last weeks feature winner Alec Gennarelli was able to race past Gates claiming position two. Olsommer held on for his first win of the season with Gennarelli, Gates, Dusty Barton, and Butch Green completing the top 5.

The CRSA Sprint Cars made their first of 3 appearances this season on Friday night. Scott Goodrich of Middletown, NY claimed top honors in his Grand Rental Station sponsored number 30 car. Dustin Purdy, Josh Pieniazek, Mike Kiser, and Brian Krummel completed the top 5.

Doug Stack Jr picked up his first career Street Stock feature win on Friday after taking over the lead with six laps to go. Ryan Codington, Ryan Stone, and Randy Fox put on a great show battling for the lead in the early stages of the event before an incident in turn 4 found them all collected. Stack’s win was not only his first Street Stock win, but his first Penn Can win as well. Ryan Stone rebounded to finish second, Street Stock rookie Rob Warner finished a solid third, with Brett Barrett and Chuck Murray rounding out the top 5.

A great battle in the 4 Cylinder main event found Frank Kennedy passing Don Doster Jr with two laps to go giving him his first win of the season. Doster ended up second with Mike Robinson finishing third. Buck Mills Sr put on a great display of racing as he collected the checkers in the Factory Stock 15 lap nightcap. Ted Mills Jr, Gary Cleveland, Jeremy Williams, and Kris Shimer completed the top 5.

PENN CAN POINTS: A large crowd was on hand to witness a full night of racing. The 50/50 winner’s share was a very impressive $643 with the $184 from last week being rolled over. This Friday features a full show of racing plus an empire series race for the Slingshots by Tobias with no increase in admission. If Dan Pompey can win this Friday for the third consecutive time, there will be a bounty on him the following week.
