Oliver wins in a close finish, Simmons gets first win
By Dana Royer/34 Raceway

Ninety-seven cars filled the pit area at 34 Raceway Saturday night, May 9 on a night that was questionable for racing earlier in the day. Rain throughout the late week and again Saturday night made for muddy conditions but the 34 Raceway crew pulled it off getting the track and pit area ready for a night of racing. Six of the seven features run on the night saw racers getting their first wins of the season. Getting feature wins in their classes were Ryan Cook, Hillsboro (Modified make-up feature), Tyler Glass, Cedar Rapids (Modifieds), Jayson Ditsworth, Gladstone, Il. (305 Sprints), John Oliver, Jr. Danville (stock cars), Dakota Simmons, Libertyville (sport mods) and Andy Baugh, Mason City, Il (IMRA Midgets). Michael Grossman, Keokuk picked up his second 4 cylinder feature win.

Coming up this week, Saturday, May 16 is 101.7 The Bull Night with racing action for IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Mods, 305 Sprints, IMCA Stock Cars, Mod Lites and 4 Cylinders. Listen to 101. 7 The Bull all week for a chance to win tickets for the best in racing action.

The IMCA Modifieds continued their feature from last week to kick things off after rain stopped the action with four laps completed. Ryan Cook had to hold off a fierce challenge from Bill Roberts the final three laps taking the win by a narrow margin. Jeff Waterman, Dustin Smith and Tyler Glass rounded out the top five.

IMCA Sport Mods saw Dakota Simmons, Libertyville, get his first ever sport mod win Saturday night. Simmons led the fourteen car field around the 3/8 mile for fifteen laps to get the win in a close finish. The top three cars crossed the finish line bumper to bumper with Simmons taking the checkered followed by Bobby Six and Austen Becerra in the thriller.

A super field of nineteen 4 Cylinders were up next with a familiar face taking the win. Michael Grossman, Keokuk, picked up win number 2 for the season at 34 Raceway after taking the lead from Bryan Shipley on lap four of the twelve lap race. Grossman pulled away from the field and cruised to the win. Josh Barns followed to finish second and Ron Kibbe, Kimberly Abbott and Shiply rounded out the top five.

Dillan Roth looked poised to get his first 305 Sprint feature win pulling away from the field for the first thirteen laps. By lap fourteen the leader would run into lap traffic and Jason Ditsworth would take advantage. Ditsworth was able to close the gap and would get by Roth with four laps to go of the twenty lap race and went on to take the checkered flag. Roth would follow to finish second and Nick Guernsey, Cody Wehlre and John Schulz would round out the top five.

Seventeen IMCA Stock Cars put on another show for the crowd with John Oliver, Jr., Danville, getting his first 34 Raceway win this season. Oliver took the lead from John Brockway on lap fourteen that went caution free up to lap fifteen. Five cautions in the last six laps troubled the class but the finish was worth the wait and Oliver would have to work to hold his lead. Shane Watts, Tommy Bowling, Jim Redman were challenging Oliver as they raced bumper to bumper. With one lap to go, the final caution came out setting up a green, white, checkered finish. Redmann took the lead on the final lap coming out of turn three but Oliver would power forward to get his lead back and took the checkered flag for the win. Redmann followed with Shane Watts, Ray Raker and John Brockway rounding out the top five.

Tyler Glass, Cedar Rapids, would get his first win of the season taking the checkered flag by several car lengths in the second modified feature of the night. Glass took the lead from Brandon Rothzen on lap seven and never looked back. With Glass holding a comfortable, lead a fierce battle was going on behind him for the second place spot. Bill Roberts would edge out Blake Woodruff at the finish line to place second with Woodruff, Rich Smith and Collin Rothzen rounding out the top five.

Sixteen IMRA Midgets competed this week with fifteen of them starting the final feature of the night. Andy Baugh, Mason City, Il. would get the win after taking the lead from Aaron Schuck on lap six of the twenty lap race. Baugh and Schuck both held comfortable leads over the rest of the field as they crossed the finish line. Aaron Hull, AJ Johnson and John Springer would round out the top five.
