(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) The monster trucks and
demolition derby brought out the fans on Saturday to see the Truliant
Federal Credit Union “Night of Destruction” at Bowman Gray Stadium.
And a night of destruction it was. Although the event started off with
relatively calm races, a string of cautions and wrecks later in the
night showed why you can never get too comfortable at the Madhouse.
Burt Myers of Walnut Cove qualified on the pole and took the checkered
in the first 25-lapper for the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series.
Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem pressured Myers but was unable to move
past him.
“It’s never easy – never easy – I don’t care if it’s 100 laps or 25,”
said Myers about the victory. “My guys came over here this morning. I
thought we were going to die it was so hot. But they keep plugging away,
they keep helping, they keep showing up – and this Fury racecar is fast.
I tell you it’s really fast.”
The “Madhouse Scramble” sent Randy Butner of Pfafftown to the head of
the pack for the start of the second race. Brandon Ward of Winston-Salem
started on the outside front row and quickly began to apply the heat to
Butner.
Butner put on a driving clinic trying his best to protect his position.
He slid through the corners but was able to hold on to the lead.

But as Butner and Ward battled, Ward lost control – and a massive
pileup ensued behind him. Lee Jeffreys of Wallburg collided hard with
Jonathan Brown, taking both of them out of the race. Burt Myers was also
caught in the wreckage, damaging his car and throwing him dramatically
off the pace.

Tim Brown of Tobaccoville was able to skirt around the pileup to move
up to second – right on the bumper of Butner. The #5 of Butner held
strong, going on to take the checkered.
“When the race started we were pretty decent. Somewhere along the way
we lost the handle on the car, and we were holding them up a little
bit,” said Butner. “But I was just digging as hard as I could go driving
my car – hate that happened behind me. But I was doing all I could do.”
In the McDowell Heating & Air Sportsman Series, Dylan Ward of
Winston-Salem moved past Kevin Neal of Walkertown to win the first
20-lapper. It was Ward’s fifth victory in five weeks.
Zack Ore of Winston-Salem moved past Blake Shupe to claim the lead in
the early parts of the second Sportsman race. Justin Taylor of
Kernersville pushed his way forward to tangle with Ore for the lead –
but they both spun as they raced hard.
Kevin Neal took advantage of the situation to grab away the lead.
However – just like in the first race – right on his bumper was Dylan
Ward. But this time Neal held strong, going on to claim his first
victory of the 2019 season.
The race for the Law Offices of John Barrow Street Stock Series was
filled with colossal wrecks – fitting for the night of destruction.
Taylor Robbins of Winston-Salem and Christian Joyce of Trinity locked
horns, and many of the field was taken out in a massive wreck. But
through it all, Nate Gregg of Lexington was able to stay ahead of the
carnage to grab his first ever victory trophy at the Madhouse.
In the Q104.1 Stadium Stock Series, Chuck Wall of Lexington emerged
victorious after a last-lap battle with Grayson Keaton of Mocksville.
The two crashed into each other and crossed the line in a photo finish,
with Wall winning by inches. In the second Stadium Stock race, D.J. Dean
claimed his first career win.
