AFTON, NY – When the green flag drops at I-88 Speedway for the ninth annual Short Track SuperNationals, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware fans will have drivers from their region in the field.
Next weekend (Friday–Saturday October 7-8), the Afton Fairgrounds comes alive for two days with the “Working Man’s Race” headlined by the 50-lap big-block/small-block Modified event on Saturday evening, the final round of the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series Fueled By VP Halmar International North Region.
A strong and talented field is shaping up for the event.
A three-time winner on the Short Track Super Series this season – including the July ‘Crazy 8s Special’ at I-88 – Ryan Godown of Ringoes, N.J., makes his return to the SuperNationals for the first time since 2013. Godown has victories at I-88, N.Y.’s Woodhull and Pa.’s Susquehanna with the STSS.
For the first time in over two years, Billy Pauch Jr. of Frenchtown, N.J., will take part in the SuperNationals, making his first-career I-88 start in the Rick Holsten-owned No. 96. Pauch Jr. won the $10,000 ‘Dirty Jersey’ event at New Egypt this past June on the STSS and has a career-best finish of second in the SuperNationals, that coming to Justin Holland in 2010.
Duane Howard of Oley, Pa., won the SuperNationals in 2011 driving for Mike Petruska. Next weekend, Howard returns to the event driving the potent Norm Hansell-owned small-block. Howard made his debut at I-88 earlier this summer in the ‘Crazy 8s’ event.
Matt Jester, a two-time Delaware International Speedway champion from Milford, Del., will make the five-hour haul north to compete in the SuperNationals. Jester was leading the SuperNationals main last October before mechanical issues sent the Clearview Farms No. 62 to the pits.
A New Jersey team with a famous racing name – Osmun – will take part in the SuperNationals. Willie Osmun of Bloomsbury, N.J., plans his I-88 debut in STSS Modified competition, while his son Billy plans to enter the Crate 602 Sportsman event on Saturday.
These drivers and many more will look to add a “working man’s” hard hat to their trophy case next weekend.
Two full days of racing are set for the I-88 three-tenths-mile.
On Friday (October 7), there are CRSA Sprint Cars in a 40-lap main, Open Sportsman paying $1,500 to win (*with Gambler’s Fee) for 35 laps (the series title will be decided) plus XCel 600 Modifieds, Street Stocks, Empire Lightning Sprints and Modified open practice rounds.
Friday admission prices are as follows: $15 for Adults, $13 for Seniors (ages 65 and up), $10 for Students (ages 9-14) with children eight and under FREE. Pit admission is $30, with no license required.
