CONCORD, N.C. –October 11, 2016- Burt Myers wrapped up the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Championship Thursday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway with a sixth-place finish in Bad Boy Off Road Southern Slam 150.
Earlier this year he also clinched the modified track championship at Bowman-Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. With two NASCAR crowns on the mantle, Myers is now focusing on winning a third championship with the Southern Modified Racing Series. With one race remaining on Oct. 22 at Caraway Speedway, Myers sits tied atop the standings with John Smith.
While the potential for three championships in one year is a stellar season, Myers has another third in mind: a third win in the John Blewett III Memorial North-South Shootout in Memory of Charles Kepley.
“It’s one of the highlights of my year,” said Myers of the North South Shootout. “It’s one of my favorite race tracks and we’ve won that thing twice.
“With the northern cars and the southern cars together; to be able to win it and do it back to back (2008-2009); and to be the only southern driver to win it: it’s really special. God’s blessed me with a lot of success and I think about those wins a lot.”
This season, Myers has three wins on the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour, two Bowman-Gray victories and one win with the Southern Modified Racing Series.
“I don’t think we’ve won quite as many races as we wanted to win,” said the 40-year-old Walnut Cove, N.C. native. “But, we’ve been super consistent.
“I think eighth is our worst finish all year long. That’s a testament to how hard we work, and how much dedication we have. This is something that we pour everything we’ve got into it and I think a lot of times when you look back at our results that’s where it shows up.”
Myers hopes that dedication and commitment pays off on Nov. 5 with a $10,000 winners paycheck in the 125-lap tour-type modified headliner. His last two runs at Concord yielded him a third-place finish in last year’s North South Shootout and a second in the Southern Modified Racing Series race in May at the half-mile speedway.
The John Blewett III Memorial North-South Shootout in Memory of Charles Kepley is an open tour-type modified show. It was hosted at Concord Speedway from incepetion in 2003 through 2010. After a four-year-stint at Caraway Speedway in Asheboro, N.C., the event returned to Concord last year.
The North-South Shootout is headlined by 125-lap features for the Tour-Type Modifieds and the Pro All Star Series (PASS) Super Late Models. The SK-Type Modifieds, Limited Late Models, Vintage Racers, Street Stock and Mini Stocks will all be in racing throughout the weekend.
